Standered Air Filter or Aftermarket?

Postby WelshFTO » Sun Mar 07, 2010 9:16 pm

whats your opinions?

Ive had a few fto's over the years and always had after market "cones" etc on

but now ive got a really mint fto ive decided to keep the whole standered set up! reason being .... well it was designd like that in japan with direct cold air feed going into the engine, rather than hot air, which must be bad for the car?

whats your opnions/experiances or knowledge etc

thanks

without proper cold air induction piping and enclosure cones will soak up engine heat. I prefer a K&N panel filter in the standard mitsu airbox. It doesn't give the same induction roar though.

thats the problem, they sound and look nice, but does it do any long term damage, must do if hot air wasn't meant for a engine

but then you see cars in afghan and hotter countrys doing ok?? !

I had an Apexi on mine but recently swapped it out for an ITG.
I'd agree that if you're replacing the factory setup then it's worth adding a CAI, without it it's just for show.
Here's a before & after.

hot air won't do any damage to your car. It's less dense than cold air so your car won't produce as much power or be as fuel efficient, but it won't damage the engine. When your driving along air cools the rad and that in turn keeps the engine cool. warm induction air won't damage it.

I hear the standard setup is best all right with a panel filter, however I'm all for the looks so I'd put in a cone.

a performance panel filter will allow better air flow.

exactly. The K&N cotton panel filter is also reusable (you can clean it and re-oil it once a year or two) which is why its expensive. The standard filter is paper and discardable. When (and if) you buy a panel filter hold it up the sky and look through it. It allows lots of light through, the paper filter does not.

The main difference for me between standard and ITG aftermarket has nothing to do with looks or any sort of efficiency - it's the sound of Mivec !!! The thing howls like a banshee with the ITG, whereas you can barely hear Mivec kick in with the standard setup.

This is one of the most noticeable sounding mods you can make with a Mivec FTO.

Its very cheap to build an air-ram into the front grill. Cost me €25 (B&Q). Gives a great cold air feed and looks the part. Well worth doing if you have a foam/cone filter.
