Fitting New mid section Exhaust

Postby DECKO » Thu Sep 15, 2005 2:19 pm

help needed.
Just got a second hand mid section for my exhaust 96 GR,
from jap import place out in ashbourn in meath.
I have been to every fast fit/quick fit etc. in the country
they dont like touching non-company(non-expensive) exhausts.
So i have decided to have a go my self,
im no engine expert but if it has nut and bolts im usually ok
is it simply take off and put on new exhaust as that is what it looks like,
what do i have to look out for and do i need new gaskets?????? :(

Should be bolt on if its the correct GR exhaust centre section part - however if its a GPX centre section the bore will be different and you will need a decent mechanic to get it to fit - I believe the mounting flange will be different. This is not rocket science for any exhuast place - its a striaghtforward job either way.

It is connected to the cat by two bolts, on the other end it is connected to the back box section by three bolts. All five bolts are prone to corrossion.
There is a heat shield near where it connects to the cat -you need might need to remove this to fully access the bolts, I think this will depend on the amount of space you have under the car to work with.
The gaskets will likely be in bits (if they are the original ones). I replaced mine but I don't think this is absolutely necessary. The gaskets might come away cleanly, or they may stay partially bonded to the exhaust. Just be sure to remove any loosly bonded remains of the original gaskets.
You should be able to use the exhaust putty (or whatever its called). Comes in a toothpaste style tube costs ~€8, thats whats most of the exhaust places will use anyway instead of making up gaskets.
Its, a faily simple job.
