FTO factory Fit HID

Postby Dubplate » Sat Sep 18, 2010 12:16 pm

The car came with factory fit HID's (I think as the writing on them is japanese) seems one of the ballasts has gone as I tried a new bulb and no joy. Any idea where to get these from or would a new HID conversion kit work?

regards
Simon

Full sets can be got for less than €50 delivered so don't look to spend more.

When you say your HIDs were factory fitted, are the ballasts under the light units like this?

Or are they mounted somewhere else, somewhere in the engine bay for example.

I haven't seen that yet so I am guessing it is under the bumper, defintetly not in the engine bay. All I see is a black unit that the bulb fits into the back of which is quite large. I will take a better look later today and get back

If its the ballast thats gone you're probably better off removing the stock one and installing a new one like a lot of the lads have done, (one that fits in the engine bay and not under the light). Dont know where you'd get the factory ballast from and its a pain to get access to it again in the event something goes wrong with it. I reckon replacing it with an aftermarket one would work though I cant confirm that as I left my own in as it was working fine. Really cant see why it was put in there in the first place, maybe when it first came out ballasts where so new they were huge units and that was the only place it could be hidden, but with smaller units now available theres no problem in getting one into your engine bay.

Yeah I think that is the best option, any recommended ones and is it the HB4/9006 model I need? Seems to be. Also 6000k or 8000k? I'm thinking 8000k. I hope these asre easy to fit, complete novice here lol

I'm not sure which ones you'd need to be honest, plenty of fellas have installed them so they could answer that.
The only problem you're likely to have is the fact that you need to remove your front bumper to install the light bulbs as the back of the holder wont come out cause of the air con pipes. The holder is longer than the non-factory HID versions and gets caught. Just be aware when removing the bumper that there are 4 bolts holding the bumper on as well as I lot of little screws which are easy to see. The bolts are not so easy to see and are accessed from under the car. Be careful putting your bumper back on again as its easy to miss the guides if not paying attention.
