Postby d_dan » Tue Jan 15, 2008 1:50 am

guys being here for the past week or so and im so envious of all of you that i am really thinking about getting an FTO

just wondering what are the tiptronic gearbox's like?
someone said they are dodgey but who better to ask than FTO owners?

Only dodgey if you don't look after them mate, service them regular and always replace the filter and use the correct grade fluid (who better than me to know what happens when the wrong grade is used eh! ) and they will serve you well.

Personally I think the auto 'box in the FTO is a very clever unit.
I'd still rather a manual though...NOI

I went for the manual and I don't regret it, but it really depends on what kind of driver you are. As far as I'm aware reliability is not an issue so it comes down to whether you sit in traffic a lot and like to relax a bit or if you'd rather do all the work. ;)

I've had both Manual and Tip FTO's. The tip is very nice for city driving but the manual is the one to have for outright performance.

Doesn't make sense to go to the hassle of importing a GS when you could have a manual mivec FTO for very little more. Will hold its value better and will be much much quicker.

Tip boxes are pretty good no doubt, I find the gear changes smooth and when its put into manual mode its quick to respond too. Its great if sitting in traffic for long periods of time like the mornings and evenings commuting from work or something, but you still cant beat a manual gearbox in any car in my opinion. Just feels like theres more of a driving feeling to it rather than the car doing the work.

Hmm, how about an Astra? (sorry convert ;))

Dan, first things first - get some insurance quotes before you get your hopes up.

Agree with CJ mate as the insurance for a 1.8 and a 2.0 Mivec is not that much different. So chances are if you can get it for a GS then what not try getting a 2.0.
Lots to think about, nothing to worry about!

20bhp is hardly trivial. Neither is the noise.

I have to say it seems odd that you're seriously considering buying a car without having researched the differences between the models?

Ah I see.

Well I definitely wouldn't sneer at the Mivec. You should get out and test drive both of them if you can find the time and then you'll know what you want.

the extra few thousand RPM on the MIVEC makes a huge difference more than the extra HP.
