Loads of FTOs

I don't know about you guys but I seem to see loads of different ones each day around Dublin. Is there a lot more than there used to be? If I was to hazard a guess i'd say that there are easily 150 in Ireland maybe a lot more. What do you think?

I'd say theres much more than 150, I reckon the figure would be nearer 1000. On this note, I was in contact with the Vehicle Registration Office before Christmas to see if I can get figures on FTOs imported into the country since 1995. I got a mail back saying that I was being referred to their IT dept (???!??) but have heard nothing since.

Wasn't there only somewhere between 8k and 10k made in total. At least 10% of those must be wrapped around trees at this stage - I'd be surprised if 10 - 15% of all ever produced are in Ireland, but I'd be curious to know if you ever find out Ciaran.

I can't remember the exact figure but theres was 20,000+ produced in Japan between 94 and 1999 if I remember correctly.

Oct 94 i think, i remember about 2 years ago a member from England posted a website with a thing on it that if you put your chassis number in it would give you the exact date it was made and his was november 94 and someone found out it was Oct94 when they started production. if i remember correctly

I have the answer to this one from an unofficial source

The figures really surprised me, I thought that there were bucket loads more FTOs in the country, but obviously not. Here goes:

Total => 346 (70 DE2A's & 296 DE3A's)

In other words, only 2% of all FTOs ever produced are driving around on our roads today.

Based on the above figures, I reckon this site has managed to collar a decent proportion of Irish Owners over the last year and a half (171)which is encouraging. It puts things into perspective when you consider the amount of people out there who:

1. Own an FTO
2. Use the Internet
3. Are enthusiatic enough to search the 'net for sites like fto-ireland.com
4. Sign up to the forums

Ok, I get your point , I think its a bit optomistic to expect that 50% of all Irish owners have registered on this site. Out of the 171 who have I think that 90 owners would be a conservative estimate i.e. just over 25%.

I think a concerted effort should be made by the existing forum members to ensure that we carry a few FTO ireland flyers in the glovebox and put them on any FTO that we come across.

Its in our own interests to build enthusiasm about the FTO - it will be a lot easier to sell when we want to upgrade to that 99 GPvR.

Heh, but isn't that half the fun??

Have a few printed off at home awaiting scissors to cut them out... think there's another silver FTO across the way from me here in the Hibernian car park (wonder what he's paying... ) I'll try to get a flyer on (unless he's already on here somewhere?) that one anyway.

yeah there is at least another 6 or 7 down here in the south kilkenny/waterford ares but i dont think they are registered on this site unfortunatly

I got a 94 D fto....just checked the reg book, says the date of first registration was 1st april 94.

Yeah - they exist alright - but I'd say that the UK gets the vast majority of late model FTO's - due to how the FTO has fallen in value over the past few years in Ireland - they still command a fair old price in the UK.

However - my understanding of the new SVA rules in the UK (If you know any better please come forward) - now means that they can't import any post 97 cars to the UK without doing some kind of model report - and that would also include a crash test!!

So hence you may have been noticing a few more 97+ model FTO's reaching our shores - Bring them on! - It should certainly make them more afforable now we don't have to compete with sterling buyers.
