vr4 engine in fto

Postby dwayne21 » Thu Sep 15, 2005 1:31 am

Does anyone have any links or any information on how to do the vr4 engine in fto properly. I want to single turbo it. I have all i need to get things going i just want to see how it fits and what other fto owners that have done this conversion have done.I have a gear box not a transmission so i have more room to deal with.

Not sure what you mean by vr4, do you mean put a different engine into the FTO?

For turbo, there's a couple of docs in the downloads page that would probably be worth looking at?

Speak to Richard on the UK FTOOC. Hes done the swap. I think it was very costly and time consuming, but he does have the fastest, most powerful FTO in the country :D

He can secound at ten of the best in the front wheel drive class!

Saw the article in one of the Jap magazines on RichardB's VR4 engined car - but it looked like quite an awkward conversion to do - he even had to make a bow in the back wall of the engine bay to make the engine fit.

Nice job in the end but I bet it cost him an arm and a leg - you should also check other options like putting an EVO engine in there. In fact there is an EVO engined FTO for sale in the UK at the mo - this would be a far cheaper route to take.

You absolutely must speak with Richard B - try PM'ing him on the UK site.

You won't be using the VR4 turbos then - What size single turbo do you intend to run with?

Good size turbo - are you buying the full kit inc intercooler etc?
Would be very interested in hearing more about this project as it happens.
What power are you hoping for? - By the sounds of it you will have 350BHP + if set up right.

I'm sure you know an awful lot more about it than I do, but 2 weeks to fit a new engine into a car is a bit of an ask, even if you're taking the time off to do it so you've all day & night to work on it.

Best of luck though, keep us updated, would be interested to see how it goes!

I have a friend who put a 323 GT (or something like that, can't think of the exact model) turbo engine into his MX3, took him a long time, and even then he discovered he couldn't close the bonnet, had to get a bulge put into it for the turbo. He was doing it in his spare time, weekends etc. but even still... I'm sure he still has wires around his engine he doesn't know what to do with!

I'll be watching this development with a lot of interest, its a serious bit of work and I imagine it won't be easy. That said, you obviously have experience in this area so I hope it goes to plan. Make sure and keep us updated.

Well i have lifted in the vr4 engine now.I got it in wired up computer in gear box on and every thing in 8 hours. It was 5 guys working at the same time.I have to finish wire up put on suspension i have to get a solid back engine mount built and hook up intercooler, blow off valve now. I also have to put in radiator and ac parts.
When that stuff is all finish i can now deal with heat wrapping and building a couple heat shields, sorting out exhaust stuff whats not.I have a question my engine didn;t come with down pipes does anyone upgrade the size of the down pipes from each turbo and if they do to how much.Right now i have a 2.5 inch exhaust system until i get in my upgraded fuel pump, fuel pressure regulator, water injection and intercooler water as well as put in the management that i have home i will not upgrade this to 3 inch.

You sound as if you know what you're doing - a huge project to take on - I know it took Richard a long long time ... have you spoken with him about it? If not I'm sure he'd give you any help he can

I spoke to him about some decisions making stuff as well as to find out what can;t work and which can. I use the fto front right engine mount instead of the vr4 one it gave me more room to work with. The engine itself is a new engine.Everything is clean as can be.I plan to take a couple pictures of the set up as well as my car.My whole dash board is out it sort of depresses me but in the end i will be happy.I have to get some heat shielding material for my fire wall.Make sure that heat doesnt try to escape. We worked on the car yester from 10 in the morning straight till 8 in the night.

Sounds like you made some great progress! Did you have any probs fitting the engine with the firewall?

Must seem like a lot of work left to do but keep at it, another few days like that and it'll be pretty close if not done.

Looking fwd to the pics myself!
