Looking for Cat pipe

Postby CByrne » Wed Jun 27, 2007 5:54 pm

CJ was kind to offer a loan of a catalytic converter but it turns out his gpx cat might not fit my gr. Does anyone have a cat converter for a non-mivec model (gs will do) they could lend at short notice? Will travel to collect, etc. Any help appreciated.

I assumed you had a GPX Colm! Anyone out there with a GR\GS cat knocking about in their shed for NCT purposes? If so, do your duty and help out a fellow FTO owner!

If its any help, there's a pic in my album of my mongoose downpipes just after fitting:

At the bottom of the pic, the downpipes connect to the cat. Got the shield on under it and all of course, but thats what it usually looks like on the car.

Yeah its for the NCT (National Car Test) which is the Irish equivalent of the DOE / MOT test. They check emissions etc.

I dunno if your under diff rules over there but its a constant debate if ya need it or not over here so I had a long word with my local place and according to him if it aint on their computer and is b4 a 2002 then its a non cat test

Dunno if this helps but 1st Id see if its on their puter and if it aint then insist they go by their bible (which I hope is the same as over here )

He actually printed it out for me from the book so I can ake it to any MOT station :D

Bump!

Possibly no GS/GR owner has a cat converter in their garden shed?
Dont like the idea of having to buy one, I suppose I could try some breakers yards but chances are slim I reckon.

Anyone know if there are universal ones, that If i overdose the car with DipTain and rev it like crazy beforehand, I might sneak a pass?

Any help appreciated!

I imagine most of the guys that have deCatted their FTO would be driving Mivecs.

Very much doubt you'd get a universal Cat to fit - try Steelroe - he may sell you a seconf hand CAT.

Diptain etc won't be enough to help you pass emissions without a CAT.

I got a universal cat fitted just before my NCT (non Mivec) - as the emmissions were way too high - worked great - and passed. Kelly's Garage in Lusk sourced it for me and fitted it. Can't remember how much -but it wasn't excessive

I got a High-Flow Weber (new) from McNamaras in Northstrand a while back. They had to modify my old exhaust to fit it though, I think it was for a GPX. Supplied and fitted was 450 all in. Mention me to Mick and you might get a discount...

Nice one - a high flow CAT would be the ideal compromise IMO. Haven't come across an FTO using a high flow CAT but they have to count as a pretty decent mod. I think as the FTO's are getting older and their CATs start to fail we're going to see more of these on the forums cars - http://www.camskill.co.uk/products.php? ... b0s11p2570

That's the one alright, as far as I can remember they do need to be warmed up a fair bit on the day of the NCT, nothing new about the FTO really!

I was thinking about one of those as an alternative to a decat before, did you find much improvement over the standard cat?

Hard to say, it's like trying to notice a 3/4 bhp increase, I'm sure it was better as opposed to worse. Only audible difference being more of a slight rasp going through the metal.

Got this off the UK forum HTH

Babylon6 wrote:I have a hi Flow cat fitted, as supplied by RR.

It is a lot quieter than a decat. It also made the car feel more responsive than standard and I got a marginal MPG gain. I have not rolling roaded it against a decat or standard so cannot give a definitive statement of its effectiveness. I would say theres prolly little difference between it and a decat.

It does keep the emissions legal and in fact my cars emissions are very clean according to the MOT station.

Expensive option. I woulda preferred a decat but I made a personal decision to be as environmentally friendly as I could be in the pursuit of more horses. The Aussies have it right. Big massive fine for decat (imho).

My cat was shot and I needed a new one. Can be difficult trying to borrow one at short notice (see above!) Apparently they only last a few years before you need a new one. I see some guy has brought out a new sportscar/supercar with Zero emissions, it can be done, I just can't believe the car industry has taken so long, they knew it was coming.
Healthy planet plus really fast zero emission cars sounds like Nirvana! :D
