Sticky Caliper

Noticed the car wasn't pulling properly. The rear offside caliper was sticking. Disk getting very hot and making a "tinging" noise when stopped. My mechanic checked the caliper, and pushed the piston back in. Needed new pads as the old ones were melted.

All seems OK now, but what would have caused it to stick in the first place? Could it be that I never ever use the hand brake? (its a tip) Or am I rapidly looking at replaceing the caliper?

Anyone had similar problems before..??

I have an offside rear caliper in a box the boot of the car (don't ask!) if you're stuck, heading to Cork later so will be kinda in your neck of the woods.

Cheers for that. It seems OK at the moment, but only had it done today. The next few days will tell I suppose. If you could keep hold of it for a while though, just in case..!

I had the same thing a few weeks ago, mechanic took the caliper apart and cleaned it.
All good since.

As for not using the handbrake, it wouldn't make a difference.
The rear brakes are used when you press the foot brake anyway.

I wouldn't be too concerned about it.

If your mechanic only pushed back the piston its very possible that it will get sticky again. Thats what happened with one of the pistons on my front caliper. If it happens, check the piston and if its corroded replace it together will all seals. All parts available on camskill and its not very complicated.

A good clean, check codidtion of the seals..consider applying some grease the sides of the piston...(Be careful with the amount as you dont want it going all over the place once it heats up..)
