Stepper Motor

Postby sinlessgunner » Sun Feb 24, 2008 3:19 pm

OK I finally got around to cleaning the stepper motor today. Took it out and cleaned it with WD40 left the battery disconnected for an hour then when I started the car......same thing. Dies when cold but once warm it's fine and runs perfectly. Revs are at 850-900 and its stable. Just starting is a probem. Anyone know what could be the cause of this? Other people have complained of problems when the car is warm but I don't. The car starts fine but I have to keep it at a low rev until it gets to running temperature or it dies. I'm baffled. Anyone want to help me diagnose it?

Still think it's the stepper - jsut because you cleaned it up doesn't mean you have resolved the issue with it. Next thing is to try a swap with someone elses working motor if you don't want to shell out yet.

The way your car is running is the way a car runs without a stepper. If you pull out the wiring plug on the stepper altogether and start the car it will behave exactly as you described, i.e. you'll need to rev it to keep it running until it's warm, then it will run fine - this is the behaviour the car exhibits when the stepper is unplugged (or in your case not working)

Stepper without a doubt, cleaning it is only in hope that it still works. There is a procedure in the manuals for testing it.

if you disconnected the battery it should die any way until you take her out a good run as the gearbox should have reset itself. mine does this with a gearbox reset and the stepper is fine
