jeep/ car transporter needed

Postby d_dan » Tue Jan 22, 2008 12:08 am

Guys and girls, goin over to get my new car in the first week or two in feb.

The .MOT and whatever is out by so long that if I try drive it onto the ferry the car will be taken off me.

So I rang the police and they said its grand if its on a trailer etc. I can get a trailer but iv nothing to pull it....

So I'm wondering can anyone rent me a jeep/ fancy driving over or have something I can use to tow it over?

I can get a trailer but need something with a tow bar

I reckon you'd still be in trouble with the MOT, trade plates aren't going to certify the car is roadworthy.

Would they pick this up only if you get stopped by cops or would they check as shes driving on the boat too?
Maybe you could claim International Waters, no mans land.

im playing with the idea of going over on the plain picking it up, and drivign it to the docks,

INSURED of course!

but the MOT etc. still out and drive it to the ferry and try drive on (like everyone else who iv spoken to says they have brought over cars with no MOT test etc.)

and if i get stopped play DUMB(er than i already am) and tell them look im only going to be in hte country for anouther half an hour so whats the point.

what ye think?

You should be ok with trade plates mot or not, several of my mates from carlow have trade plates/insurance and they have been buying cars in england for years and have never had a problem when stopped. once the v5 part that you have kept has it down that it's leaving the country. (make sure thats the section ye sign)

Before I brought my car in I did an online check.
I'd recommend it, for peace of mind if nothing else.

I'd be sure if you're planning on driving it if its been crashed, that she actually drives ok. You dont want to go over planning to drive over and find out theres something seriously wrong with the engine or that some part of it which is required to be legally driven (like lights) are not working.

I do not think that buying a crashed FTO (this is the second one you've suggested) in the UK, is the best approach. Yes they may be cheap, but importing damged goods, I'd fail to see the saving, there is a resonable supply of cheap -sub 5.5k FTO's on carzone B&S etc. Something like this looks like a much better prospect http://www.carzone.ie/usedcars/index.cf ... rID=860780

Buy a cheap, neglected FTO, and spend the whole term of ownership cursing it as you shovel money into a bottomless pit. Always better to pay a premium for a cherished, well maintained example, instead of kidding yourself that you will undo years of neglect, with your socket set and some Tcut.

All that said I would not be too worried about a cat C, in this context, at this stage the perceived value of the car is so low, combined with high cost of OEM parts, any minor fender bender could easily write the car off.
