I do not think that buying a crashed FTO (this is the second one you've suggested) in the UK, is the best approach. Yes they may be cheap, but importing damged goods, I'd fail to see the saving, there is a resonable supply of cheap -sub 5.5k FTO's on carzone B&S etc. Something like this looks like a much better prospect

Buy a cheap, neglected FTO, and spend the whole term of ownership cursing it as you shovel money into a bottomless pit. Always better to pay a premium for a cherished, well maintained example, instead of kidding yourself that you will undo years of neglect, with your socket set and some Tcut.
All that said I would not be too worried about a cat C, in this context, at this stage the perceived value of the car is so low, combined with high cost of OEM parts, any minor fender bender could easily write the car off.
