FTO off the road, disaster

Postby splitrims » Mon Apr 11, 2005 9:42 am

Hey folks,

My beloved water pump decided to pack up last friday so i have to take the car off the road for the time being. I have a new timing belt and tensioner on the way from Camskill and a set of tappets which i need to change as well, but the water pump is not so easy to get.
I've been in touch with a few mitsi garages and they don't have in stock. It will take something like a week and a half to get in from Japan and i just can't wait that long.

Does anybody know if the water pump on the GR is the same as in any other car??????

I will be taking plenty of pictures of the change which i'll give to CJ to throw up on the site so anybody looking to change a timing belt, recondition an alternator or change the tappets, watch this space.
If you see me behind you, move over.

Yes, its the same as a GPX, Some Galants (e.g E53A) and the Legnum. P/N is MD302010 btw.

I remember having to get a water pump in for the GS a few years back, I had to get it in from Japan at the time, p/n is MD309756 and its the same as the Mirage (CJ4A) pump.

Good man Karl, you can throw together a rough guide for the Knowledgebase forum, I can host the pics and you can link to them as needed.

All i can say is thank God for Camskill. Mike has a water pump and everything else that i need including tappets. He's about half the price as well. I was quoted €165 plus vat for a water pump from Mitsi in Limerick and Camskill are doing them for less than half that.

I will be colour coding the engine bay as well and adding a few more shiny goodies which are in preparation at the mo so barring any more disasters i'll be back on the road for Sunday.

Cheers for the part numbers Ciaran.

Camskill is a very good FTO supplier - can't speak highly enough of Mike - I've ordered a load of bits from them before - brakes, filters, ITG, Iridium plugs, Belts and tensioners, bushes and droplinks, de-Cat pipe - all good value and all delivered within a couple of days.

Karl - Good luck with the overhaul - thats quite a lot of work to take on by yourself - the waterpump must be an absolute nightmare to change surely??

It looks like it could be a lot of fun alright. I'll be taking out the engine mount and keeping the engine up on stands so i'll get as much access as possible. I think the air-con pipes could be a bit of fun to get around becuase i don't want to depressurise the system but if i have to i will.

I have a copy of the mitsi manuals and they give some good info so at this stage i'm mildly confident. I have to change out a tappet in the rear bank as well so i'm going to get the manifold cleaned up while its off and i'll change the brushes in the alternator too. It's as easy do it now when it will be off the car anyway besides trying to take it off again in a few months time to change 'em out. I've about 130,000 on the clock so it's time to do some preventative maintenance on the old girl.

Unfortunately it's miles. I clocked up almost 35,000 the year before last so she's moving on a bit. On the plus side i put it through the nct a few weeks back and the emissions were reading better than a new car so she's well looked after.

I think its testimant to the build quality of the cars that 10 years on and that kind of mileage they still look the part and go the distance. Because it's lowered i have to change droplinks every 18 months or so, but other than that I've had no major problems. (except my water pump of course)
