UK import legistlation change

Postby CJ » Wed Apr 28, 2004 1:48 pm

In line with a change in UK import legistlation, its going to be very hard to import a JDM only car into the UK, this works in our favour as the facelift FTOs that are being snatched up by all of the UK dealers will be in much less demand going forward. See this post on the SG FTOList, heres the guts of it:

If you are an FTOOC member this will be explained in the next newsletter
thanks to an article by Dave Wilson. Any car imported from 97 on needs a
model report this is more complex than the SVA as it involves crash testing
etc.. most cars that are on sale in the UK/Europe have these so an MR2 can
be imported from Japan easily as it has european type aproval and a model
report. Cars like the FTO have never been available officialy with type
aproval in the UK or Europe so do not have a model report, due to the cost
of doing one it will probably never materialise. Cars that are 10years or
more old do not require an SVA or model report (just an MOT) so these are
the ones to buy if you are after something modified. Cars pre 97 that are
not 10 years old still need an SVA.

While this is bad news for UK owners and importers, its good news for us lot. I might actually get a look in on a manual 99 GPvR Aero series!

I Hate to dampen everyone's hopes (can see everyone rubbing their hands saying next up a 99 gpx manual) but they have their facts wrong there, as of 1999 the fto was for sale as a non-grey import in england thru mitsubishi's racing division....rallyart/cordsport. it's just that people didn't buy any from them as they were way over priced. but because they were available it shouldn't be an issue. Sorry :(
