when i change gears from second to third and put my foot down, before it changes to third gear it gives a kick...can anyone tell me what causes it to do so...it is an automatic and tiptronic gearbox...

I assume you're driving in auto rather than tip mode? When you say a 'kick' is it like a jolt? If so, read on:

Firstly, do you know when the ATF (transmission fluid) and filter were last changed? If not, then get it done, its important to change the fluid and filter every 10k or so, especially on older FTOs. Its also possible that the gearbox has been overfilled at the last change, this can result in clunky gear changes. Also try resetting the gearbox ECU by disconnecting the negative terminal of the battery for 45mins or so, this will clear the memory that the ECU has of your driving style and in turn revert gear changes back to factory default.

I would imagine its the oil and filter need changing. Mine was starting to do that going from 4th to 5th, there was a large jolt sometimes, especially if changing up when the speed was just over 60kmph, as the gears won't go up if you're speed is too low.

Just for reference, I found that the speeds are;

From 2nd to 3rd: Over 25kmph
From 3rd to 4th: Over 40kmph
From 4th to 5th: Over 60kmph

Sometimes it will change if you're slightly lower than the speed but generally the above speeds seem to be pretty much constant on my tip box at least.

Change you're gearbox oil and filter and I reckon you'll find that you're changes are a lot smoother, mine did anyway.
