Overheating ??

Postby DISCOSTU144 » Thu May 15, 2008 8:10 pm

Hi, I am after a little advice if possible.

My radiator fan does not seem to be working. Actually neither is the other fan, which I think is the aircon fan.

I only noticed this the other day as there was a strange noise from the engine and it sounded like it was about to cut out and when I looked I noticed the fan wasnt going and thought it was strange as I had just been on a long journey and it was quite warm.

I cheked oil and water levels anyway and although they were low, they werent below the min. However when I topped them up to the max the noise stopped (coincidence) and hasnt made the noise since.

The fan still does not work though. 3 days at least now. I have watched it from first starting the car, to when the guage says it is at the correct temp and it never moves.

The temperature guage is in the middle where it should and always has been, however I have a gut feeling that it isnt working properly and the engine is infact overheating (dont ask me why I think this)

I have checked the fuse for the fan but this is not blown.

I am just wondering how I can find the fault, or if there is a likely problem.

I assume it is either a faulty thermostat (i.e the fan is not kicking in coz it doesnt think it has to) or there its a wire/electrical fault.

Any thoughts? Anyone with similar problems in past?

Would anyone know where the thermostat is/how much it would cost to replace/how easy it was to replace etc

Thanks in advance.

Here's the thermostat for the V6.

It could well just be the fan or the sensor that's gone though. If the thermostat was gone the coolant wouldn't go through the engine and it would overheat and you'd be screwed. At least that's what happened to mine.

Here's the coolant temperature sensor.

Thanks for the reply.

So you dont think it is the thermostat?

How can I tell if its the fan or the sensor for sure?

Do I need to take this to a garage to be sure?

I would take it to a garage rather than risk driving it like that. I had to completely replace my engine after my thermostat went.

Maybe somebody on here will be able to tell you with more certainty.

Also both the links you have go to the same thing (the thermosat). Are they the same thing? Also where is the coolant temperature sensor?

My mistake, I've corrected the link now.

I'm not sure where the sensor is as I never had to replace it.
