Any jobs while engine out?

Postby Uncle B » Sun Apr 18, 2010 10:19 pm

My mech has my engine out and apart (replacing all engine gaskets) so I'm just wondering is there anything that ye would recommend I doing while its in this state?

Maybe replace some part with a performance one or just a new one seeing as the car has just over 200k km on the clock? He's found that the tappet retainer clips are shagged so I'm thinking there might be other essential brittle bits of plastic that might need to be replaced?

Check bushes on ARB (strutbrace). These are pain to replace in normal circumstances as compare to 10 min work while the engine is out. Check the state of affairs in the engine bay, take a good look at brake system, clutch, check the wiring for wear, CHANGE THE FUEL FILTER, nobody seems to be doing it.
As for the engine job, better talk to you mechanic first, any decent one will tell you what to do in your particular case.
good luck with the job

I'd give the bulkhead a good cleaning.

The clutch was replaced about 2 years ago, timing belt + tensioners about 7 months ago.

Could you link me to the lightened/performance flywheel Muad? Did you get one when you did your clutch? Noticeably different?
Is this looks like a decent one?

I might be waiting a while for the tappet screw clips to get here so I reckon I'll give the rocker cover a lick of paint, and clean/replace some filters, give the bay a general tidy etc.. Although I have exams around the corner...

EDIT: Screw it I may aswell get a decat now too

I'm guessing it would be easier to set up oil temp/pressure gauges now too? Or would they be considered unnessesary?
