tiptronic Gear box problem

Postby ftonewbie » Fri Jan 16, 2009 4:09 pm

Hey all. No longer a newbie as the name suggests! 4 speed tiptronic gearbox causing problems. Goes straight into 3rd and most of the time wont select reverse - have to push it! Not very suave and certainly not impressing the ladies! haha
Works ok in tiptronic mode once you get going.
Any ideas??
Rang A&M as they are listed here and they are quoting 2k without even looking at the car, although in fairness they may know exactly what it means and what it will cost to fix.
Have called Pat Cassidy who was great and I have to bring it to him next week to assess the situation.
Just thought someone on here might have come across similar problems and have the answers.
Really don't want to have to fork out that kind of dosh.
Replaced the transmission fluid and filter - no joy.
Thanks in advance....

Havent a clue but do a diagnostic and it should reveal all... Use search and you'll find plenty on it...

As above... definitely do a diagnostic yourself. See http://www.ftowa.com/html/workshop/workshopart07.html Codes are listed at http://www.fto-ireland.com/forum/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=3998 I had a somewhat similar problem and was able to fix it myself for approx €70 thanks to help from the forum (see http://www.fto-ireland.com/forum/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=8552). Definitely worth having a look yourself first.

Thats great! You have given me hope - can't believe I might get away with €70!! Looking forward to trying out the suggestions. I will jump for joy if its just the speed sensor and from reading some of the articles you suggest it seems that that really could be it. N is flashing intermittently etc. Gonna do a check on it during the week as the car is in the shop at the moment to fix another couple of minor problems. Will let you know how I get on. Many thanks for your help!

Hopefully its something small, but I think if you're N is flashing then it could be a sign of the gear box being on the way out. Run the diagnostic anyway just to rule that out. Fingers crossed its something smaller for you.

It could be but its more likely a dodgy sensor. The N light will flash if its not getting the right signals from the sensors. As per Baldrick, undertake a diagnostic and let us know the outcome.

Hey all

Problems reading Diags

Just got the car back from the garage - heater was leaking and so put some sealant in and seems to have sorted the problem.

And so to my other gear box issue...

Followed the instructions re reading the diags and I earthed the connector etc. However, all that is happening is that the engine light keeps blinking continuously. No readable code that I can see..

Any ideas??

Cheers

mine one get the similar problems, i went through a diagnostic test with the engine light blinking continuously, however, the N light flashed in sequence of 41, 42, 43, as per workshop manual, they stand for 1st gear 2nd gear and 3rd gear don't meet specifications. it required a further investigation using an oscilloscope. I don't have such equipment and i reckon it is possible both I/O sensors were broken.

The Flashing light is the diagnostic code. Read up on them and it will make sense. I remember reading about this before. I'm not to familiar with it but this is my undrstanding of how it works. If I'm wrong I apologise but I'msure someone else will correct me that knows more about it. I hope my explanation makes sense:
You should notice the light has long and short flashes. Count each type (ie 2 long 4 short) so that would give you diagnostic code 24. Look up code 24 and see what it means. Hope this helps. Good luck with it anyway.

Yes for gearbox problems when doing the diagnostic it is the N light that should flash. With my box it started by showing 42 and 44. At that stage I was hoping it was only the input/output sensors. However things quickly took a turn for the worse and I lost all gears, car would not move but in 3rd. Diagnostic now showed 41,42.43,44,46 which is all gears for a 4 speed tiptronic including reverse. Took her to an auto specialist - result gearbox would cost a fortune to fix. Ended up getting a reconditioned one which will be fitted next Wednesday. Hope your problem is less serious.

Cheers that, boru, it's really unfortunate for you to recondition the gearbox
I've just waiting for the sensors to arrive and try to install them. plus a gearbox oil change and filter change. hope the car can get back onto the road soon.

Hope you sorted this out but saw this on ebay.

if its more serious and you need a new box this seems quite cheap and is gauranteed. Hope it doesnt go this far tho...
