Looks like a really nice car actually.. it's still a bit dear though..

But I must say I'm loving the seats and the alloys..

Tasty looking FTO - Like the Sparco Turinos and the rims.
Ridiculously low mileage too.

This car has to belong to a member on here? Too many FTO Ireland type mods. Come on - show yourself!

My FTO

Postby gary2008 » Mon May 26, 2008 3:20 pm

Lads, its my FTO. Its a very well looked after 1997 FTO GX Tiptronic which I have owned since 2002. I haven't driven it much, just a few weekends over the years, hence the very low mileage. All parts were sourced from Scotland and the Uk, some from Ireland. I've kept it clean, polished and running smoothly. Serviced it every year whether run or not. I absolutely love this car, its a timeless design and would make a nice classic if looked after. If I owned a house with a garage I would keep it, but I dont. I'd like to see someone getting enjoyment out of it. I bought a new Navara recently so I can't justify having two cars. Its cost me 21k including car(14k) / excluding labour so I don't think the price is that crazy! I'm open to offers. If you know of anyone looking for a nice fto please let me know.

Cheers,
Gary (0877522511)

Gary, firstly welcome to the forum and good luck with the sale, you've obviously looked after the car well and that will stand to you when it comes to selling up. As others have the said, the seats and wheels are a nice touch and the car looks very clean inside and out.

I guess it all depends on how long you're willing to hang on for the right buyer, at the price you're quoting, you won't shift the car overnight. At this point in time, you would expect to pay no more than 9k for a well looked after facelifted 97 FTO GX Tip with choice mods. Personally, I think you need to be a bit more realistic with your price if you're serious about selling.

Am I reading your post right, you paid 21k euro for the car? How many years have you owned it?

Think when Gary said 21K that the car was 14K, but extras and services, etc., would have brought the cost up to 21K. Am I right?

Hi CJ, Dragonheart,

Thanks for the welcome and comments. Great idea for an FTO club and great website - lotz of info on it.

I bought the car for €14,200 in November 2002 so I have it 6 years. I spent €7,000 on upgrade parts alone (OZ wheels, Sparco seats, ITG Induction Kit, Apex suspension, Samco pipes, Pioneer audio ipod ready, JBL speakers, Stainless brake lines, Grooved discs, Powerflow exhaust(nice sound!), Cusco brace, Magnecor leads, Hella fogs, Varta battery, Cobra Alarm, lotz of shiny bits and more...), I love the lines of the car so I didn't stick on any bodykits - less is more as they say! I haven't included the cost of fitting or servicing so the car has cost me alot of money to have it looking the way it does.

The price may seem high, but its just a figure. I wouldn't refuse a reasonable offer. Just gotta wait n see. Someone might fall in love with it!

Theres no harm in testing the waters to see what bites, theres a buyer out there for every car after all.

Tasteful mods are great BUT they don't necessarily add massively to the worth of a car, for me, the extras will increase interest levels more than anything else. Same for servicing and upkeep, a well looked after car with proof of servicing will be much more saleable to prospective buyers.

At a guess, I spent at least 20k euro on modifying (tastefully!) and maintaining my last FTO GPX over a 6 year period (price of car not included). I sold it earlier in the year for a fraction of what I spent in total (the guts of 30k) but I didn't expect to get much in the way of the total spend back (some have said I should have asked for more but thats another story ;)).

Have a look at my original ad for inspiration:

99% of buyers will not care about how much a person might have spent on servicing and mods etc. Members on this forum would be the best judge of what an FTO might be worth in my opinion.
Prices have dropped a lot over the last 12 months

Also have to take into account it is a Tip GX, not that there is anything wrong but for anywhere near that kind of money I would be expectin at least a 99-00 GPX manual or VersionR.

Very nice lookin car though. Good look with the sale.

Yeah, comments noted lads, cheers. I'm pretty much just testing the water as CJ said cos u never know whats out there and whos looking!

I was driving my FTO through a hotel carpark in Donegal about 3 years ago and I was stopped by a middle aged respectable chap driving a brand new s class mercedes at the time. He asked me would I sell my car to him he loved it! I told him NO. True story. I should have kept a contact for him!

My god CJ you sold that for a song! Nice car.
