New launch from Maxol:
Maxol is replacing its regular unleaded petrol with its new E5 fuel - a blend of 95% petrol and 5% locally produced bio-ethanol which will retail at the same price as standard unleaded petrol. Maxol’s E5 fuel has been successfully piloted at over 24 service stations throughout the North East of Ireland since September 2006. The bio-ethanol fuel in E5 is 100% organic and is currently made from whey, a milk derivative and a bi-product of the Carbery Milk Products Cheese plant in Ballineen, Co. Cork.

Wonder if this will grow and spread?

This is very interesting as it should not only reduce the demand for Petrol but also boost our own economy providing jobs on the Bioeth farms!!
Fingers crossed... i wonder if the RON is affected!?

Very marginally I would say. E85 is 104ron, a 5% concentration mixed with 95ron petrol isn't gonna give you much of a change (somone can work out the maths
)

I think it will work our somewhere around 96.5RON dependant on the quality of the bio-ethanol. for some peculiar reason the EU has set a limit of a 5% mix - a 10% mix would bring the fuel up to 98RON which would suit the FTO/Zed/RX7 a lot better.

i.e. more of a gain than the majority of off-the-shelf octane boosters.

I think any more than 5% and the car manufacturers would kick up a stink about warranty.

Found this on the 200sx ownerclub site..
Based on 10 gallons of E5 which is 95% 95RON and 5% 104RON.
So that's 9.5gallons of 95RON and 0.5 Gallons of 104 RON
Therefore 9.5 x 95 = 902.5
0.5 x 104 = 52
Total = 954.5
Also
Tesco in the UK sells E5 fuel rated (99RON)
The Tesco chain of supermarkets in the UK have started selling an E5 brand of gasoline marketed as 99 RON super-unleaded. Price-wise it is cheaper than the other two forms of high-octane unleaded on the market, Shell's V-Power (99 RON) and BP's Ultimate (97 RON).

Erm - thats not quite how it works though - otherwise how would a 10% E5 mix ever get to 99RON.

MyFFTO is right lads. This isn't a maths question and the RON rating does not increase logarithmically. E5 should be closer to 99RON. I would hope it will be at least 98RON.

Yeah Maxol confirmed this in an email to my co-worker.
(a fellow petrol head despite him currently driving a Corsa!)
I censored random bits & cut out the legal buzz.

Kinda related, the NZ Motor Industry Association have compiled a list of compatible cars:

Bit of a mixed bag. Whats needed is an official response from Mitsubishi Japan re E5 compatibility.

Similar discussion going on
here. Some concerns raised over moisture absorption, corrosion etc.

yeah you cannot have water in the tanks with an ethanol mix. I would presume that Maxol will need to inspeact all of their tanks before switching all their unleaded to E5.

Just talking to a Maxol store manager who reckoned it'd cost the same as regular unleaded.

Has anybody determined wether E5 is safe to use in the FTO yet?

I'm nearly on empty now - so I'll be sticking in a tankful over the weeked..
If I don't post at all next week come see me in Drogheda hospital/morgue..
It should be quite safe -the ecu in the fto does some adjustments on it's own afaik...

I put in a full tank at the Maxol in Templeogue (which according to that list has E5) but that was on October 5th so I'm not sure if they had it then... Either way I haven't noticed a difference.
If anything it's not running as nice as it did with V-Power (which I had tried for the previous tank) but that could be largely imagination/changing weather.

I can't imagine that a 5% ethanol mix will knacker things up in terms of fuel lines (rubbers) or fuel filters, as far as the engine is concerned I would be less worried about this aspect.
I doubt that Maxol would be selling this mix if they felt there would be a backlash in a few years time in terms of damage to 'less-recent' cars.
