Pulsing Battery Power (Not steady at 14v)

Postby FTO_GPX09 » Tue Aug 25, 2009 11:35 am

Hi,

Wondering if any one could give me any advice. I have just bought a FTO GPX 1995 and it has a strange problem with the battery power I think... the battery gauge fluctuates between 12v - 14.5v (pulsing) and all the dash pannel lights + headlights (pulse) dim then bright constantly.

The alternator has just been reconditioned a few months back - does this sound like a problem with the battery it's self or the alternator again?

Thanks for any help. :)

Sounds like the alternator, check the belts and tensioners for free movement / slippage, also check visible earth connections.

A sure fire test is to start the car and diconnect the negative terminal from the battery - the power being generated from the alternator should be sufficient to keep the car running. If it cuts out, the alternator is at fault.

Thanks CJ.

I'll do that test as a starting point and go from there, will post back once I have had chance to do it.

I'm guessing it's not going to be cheap to fix if it's the alternator? Could a poor earth connection cause that type of problem?

Cheers.

Possibly, yes. Search the forum under 'alternator' for more info on costs and procedures.

Hi,

I did the alternator test and the car still ran with the negative terminal disconnected, I checked the earth/belts and they are all fine.

Any ideas what the next step would be? Battery?

Thanks for any help,
Dave
