Reving' all alone!

Postby Lisa FTO » Thu Jan 12, 2006 2:14 pm

Any ideas of what excessive revin' of the cars own accord might be???
Even when sitting in neutral the rev counter is going up to about 3 without hesitation, and it's getting to the point now that when I'm at the lights people think I'm revin' intentionally to be a little girl racer and challenging to a race with the noise the exhaust is making ha ha....Electrics?? :?: :?: :?: :?:

At idle, the engine should turn over at 500rpm (slightly more if the a/c is on).
Lisa, it sounds like the stepper motor needs cleaning or replacing, see link below, cleaning is a relatively straightforward process. If the problem persists, you'lll need to buy a new stepper motor.

Mine is about 600sh at idle, a lot more after a cold start. Is it only the first few minutes after startup, or all the time?

No, it's actually after the engine is warmed up and very obvious when I'm in lower gears or neutral (she's acting like a woman possessed...!!!). The worrying thing is that when in a low gear, the car is jolting forward slightly due to the high reving. If it makes sense, it's going faster than my acceleration :!: I think I'll drop over to Paul Nolan next week and have him investigate.......

As I was saying Lisa, it sounds like the stepper motor is at fault, claning it is a 20 min job and can be undertaken without any technical knowledge.

Has any one been fiddling with the TPS, IIRC someone on the uk site had this issue, might be worth popping in and having a look for it. I'll have a loo if I remember, gotta go out and wash the wheels right now (Lunch time)
