Reducing your Camskill Delivery Costs

Postby Kace » Wed May 06, 2009 10:12 pm

Don't know if anyone else here is like me and loves Camskill but hates their courier based shipping costs, especially if it's something small you need. Mike from Camskill won't always just put stuff in the post either as things have been known to 'go missing' - something that he doesn't want to have to deal with.

I have a suggestion that could work well for our various FTO owner 'hubs' around the country and could save us all a few quid in these recessionary times.

1. We could seek to place a monthly consolidated order with Camskill in the Dublin region (or any other region that has a number of owners - for practicality purposes), for items that people require
2. An FTO-Ireland long standing member (different each month) could volunteer to take order details and place the order using Paypal or their own personal Credit Card
3. Once shipping costs are shared out and all funds have been transferred for items being ordered, the order would be placed.
4. People could then arrange to meet up in the locality and give everyone their bits and pieces after they have arrived.

Obviously it's not going to be quite as quick as ordering something yourself and won't work for emergencies, but it would save us all a few €€€ if you can afford to wait for a short while.

Would anyone else be on for this ? Obviously this would be a trust based system, however I think that there are a good number of people on here that have built up solid reputations and so others would be willing to trust in their ability to collect money and place an order.

I am happy to discuss with FTO-Ireland committee to agree who the first volunteers could be - assuming that they are happy to support the service.

Thoughts ?

I'm up for anything that might save a few shillings, was thinkin of ordering adjustable camber bolts from Camskill but the £14 delivery charge puttin me off, have given them more than enough of my hard earned recently. Ordered apex springs and track rod ends, got a lousey £6 pound discount. considering I bought a Blueflame exhaust at £290 the month before with no discount

trust based system is a bad idea unfortunately. I think we have seen on here before how it can go wrong. Especially if there are wrong parts ordered or mistakes made, it puts alot of pressure on whoevers card was used to help with refunds.
you suggested that "it would save us all a few €€€ if you can afford to wait for a short while." If you can wait a short while just ring or email Mike and tell him to send the item regular royal mail for about 25% of the shipping costs. still get it within a week. just not 2 days as with courier. I always do this. I remember the automatic system tried to charge me 14euro shipping for 2 rubber rocker cover gaskets!!! A quick phone call sorted it and I paid 2euro envelope post. had them in 3 days. The guys at camskill are quite accommodating on this front. Obviously if your buying something big like an exhaust or something heavy like an alternator, then shipping will be expensive either way.
which reminds me, if we did a group buy and one person bought 4 tyres and an alternator, would the shipping charges still be divided equally if some of the group only bought decals or a gasket something like that?

Trust issues again, I agree.

Nice theory, but putting it into practice is another thing.

At best you'll be splitting £14, I think it's best left up to individual members to organise.
Handy alright if you live close by or there's a meet coming up.

True - it could be a pain if people order the wrong stuff. Personally I have never returned anything to them. Maybe if people are careful this could be avoided.

In relation to the trust thing - I think that most are honest on here and people would have to make up their own minds on people on the basis of whether they have actually met them or simply have a knowledge of the person and a sense for them from the forum.

I haven't had the same experience - maybe if you want to ship a couple of gaskets worth a few quid it's not a problem. Mike generally doesn't want the hassle of a non-recorded delivery for anything that's worth a decent amount, like £50 or more.

The idea of this is for smallish items that are charged normal delivery charges, i.e. excluding exhausts and tyres. I certainly don't plan to carry and exhaust around dublin on my roof rack to meet up with someone and give it to them :D

So, is anyone interested. I've got a couple of small things to buy and am open to offering up my card to handle the payment for a May order, if anyone Dublin based has bits and bobs to order. I'm open to trying this out for a potential order the week after next.

Just add your name to the list if you have items to buy. We can do the details by PM. Ultimately I would look for people to either transfer money to my bank account or pay via Paypal - not sure which is easier
