does it make ''clik clik'' when you turn the key ?
if the battery is fine and all connections are proper it can be the starter motor .
is the engine turning ? could be a fueling problem

have a search around the forum using the SEARCH BUTTON and you can find loads of info about that

Which model do you have.

It could be alarm/immobiliser if fitted. Also if the IFS is gone the car may not start (Ignition Failure Sensor)

has to be starter or Bendix.

motor is whirring but clutch mechanism not engaging properly.

Bendix is part of the starter.
Does sound like the starter is the problem. Check all the connections to the starter first. Give the started a few taps of a hammer and see will it start then.

Sorry

Starter motor turns and rotates a shaft, the bendix extents the shaft so that it makes contact with the flywheel, this turns the engine, once the engine is started the shaft retracts so that the starter motor isn't in contact with the flywheel.
That's why if you have your engine running and you turn the key to start you hear a horrible crunching noise, that's the flywheel making crap of your starter motor.

Mims, is there any noise when engaging the starter? Have you checked the obvious things like battery / alternator condition? (when the engine is running, disconnect the negative terminal from the battery, if the car cuts out, the alternator need fixing).

The noise you har from the alt is most likely a worn pully, get a replacement from www.camskill.co.uk
