Did you get any pictures of the job, placement of LED's, routing the cables etc. Never got a chance to take photos when I did mine.

if you stick them up on your Bebo,
right click on the image,
Image
click on "copy image location", that copys the url of the image,

when you are typing your post click on the "Img" button, then paste the URL of the image, then click "Img" again,

it should look like this:

I think there's a sticky on how to post pictures that goes in more depth and explains it a bit better!

How did you manage not to have that extra blue glow in your air con?
When I got my glow dial's fitted, it totally distorted the air con unit, so I left the old bulb's in there instead? Lower wattage bulb's maybe? :?

Cool!! :smt023
Very impressed. Would never have thought of green too, but it looks class, and works well with the stereo. Good work!

Glad everyone likes it!! Marie, I think I do have the extra blue glow....I'm not sure what you're talking about but if you mean on the screen I got the LED in dead centre and theres a big shine there. Nothing I can do really to prevent it though! And the blue LED behind the Outside Temp button died too!! Not impressed after all the work haha!

it's more likely that your wiring isn't done properly than the LED blowing.
check where you joined it.

No it actually broke off from the wiring I checked it. It came loose at the bulb and that was the end of it. Gonna get another pack of them tomorrow and put one in. I'll find a home for the rest of em!

Any chance you might take a few before - during and after shots please.. I'm keen to do this myself - but I don't think I fully understand where you're putting the leds..

from what I remember, if you take the climate control unit apart, (there are some thin but long screws on the back) you need to remove the temp knob before you take it apart.

Once apart, the front panel should clip off form the white colored main box handy enough.

This picture is what I remember the inside of the panel to roughly look like!
Image

the buttons are sitting in holes in the front panel, the same as the buttons in a regular desktop calculator would be. there are white plastic clips inside the buttons which also press the buttons on the PCB inside the climate control unit.
Image
apologies for the crap drawing by the way!

Image

once these clips are seperated from the buttons, the buttons pop out quite easily. you then put a LED into the hollow button anf replace the clip. the wires for the LED's are then threaded through the holes on the top or bottom of the climate control unit.

If anyone has a climate control unit that's knackered, I'll gladly do a step-by-step picture guide! for now my Senior infants standard drawing will have to do.

Those are pretty cool drawings mate!

I've had the unit apart but I didn't remember the buttogs being hollow..it makes alot more sense now..thanks..

I'll pop down to Hullfords in Blanch during the week and pick up some leds.

is this a new trend???

now that I remember, the buttons are pushed in from the front, so need to be pushed out of the front panel from the inside once the clips have been removed.

Could well be - I did replace the standard bulbs with LEDs a looong while back but I was never really happy with the lack of brightness..especially when I drive a golf pretty often as well..the dash is awash with lovely bright lights :-)

Colm your FTO lives on in the lighting of other people's aircons haha!! It's really cool though I've had quite a few people comment on them. Where did you put the other LEDs in the door and where did you wire them to? I won't be copying that now but just out of interest because I can't think of anything obvious! Sounds really cool though. I'm thinking of putting some into the actual vents maybe or something like that. A mate of mine put some blue neon under his seats and his whole car lights up blue inside. It's a bit mad not to my liking but it's some effect!! This is my favourite part of modding, making my car a bit different to everyone elses (except Colms) ha!

Anyone want to suggest some ideas I could try?

Oh and Maud I'll do a step by step this weekend and post the pics. Be a help to a few people I think!!

Yeah good plan! For reading the paper in heavy traffic! You can actually get blue LEDs that can be dash mounted but I don't want to go too overboard haha!

the red LED's on the doors are for the alarm.

Image

VW fit LED's to the doors like above as part of the security system.

I didn't know that. My alarm sensor is just inside the top of the door though and I've no LEDs on my doors at all. Sounds like too much work anyway haha! Thinking about doing something with the cig lighter and ashtray anyway because I don't smoke so have no use for them. Maybe put a kind of grille up or something with lights behind. Might be cool!

Dials are the way to go if you're getting rid of the ashtray and cig lighter.

See my dial related saga here!

here was the work in progress

Someone on here is selling vaccuum and oil temp gauges, Halfords also do air/fuel meters, oil temp dials and other such useful bits that look cool!
actually an oil temp meter is a useful thing if you have a MIVEC.
