I need a fast cheap bhp boost, not a filter.

Postby blackphoenix626 » Mon Jan 17, 2011 10:46 pm

Ok so i have a standard 95 Gr with a HKS air filter and nothing else, what would be the next step in increasing a lil more bhp from the car, starting from the cheapest mod of course :)

Shave a few kilos from the car then add
A decat pipe ,
Denso SparkPlugs and aftermarket plugleads
lightweight alloys

and money depending an aftermarket stainless steel cat back exhaust system will not do any harm
Also make sure the car is serviced in time

All the seats you're not using would be the 1st thing..

then spare wheel & tools..

most of the center console can be removed as well..

it's not pretty tho - but if you really dont like people seeing your car in that state you can always add some window tints..

Given that you already have the airfilter in place you could also look at ensuring that you have the best possible cold-air-flow..

and.. if you have a bit of dosh knocking about I'd look at

1. Downpipes
2. DeCat
3. Rest of exhaust (cat-back)

It's also worth while making sure you have good proper sparkplugs installed... personally I'm a big fan of the Denso Iridiums..
..and never under estimate the difference good oil and a fresh oilfilter can make.

Or you could sell it and get a gpx :-)

Removing the spoiler would probably aid aerodynamics

i think muad hit the nail on the head

Induction kits dont add BHP to non turbo cars unless they are mapped to use them!, in fact if anything they lose you 1 or 2 BHP, best job is the standard airbox with a drop in aftermarket filter.

Next thing is definitely an exhaust, decat cuts out the restriction in the exhuast, then a proper cat back system for your model along with a manifold. i dont really know wats available for the FTO. just make sure its not too big, or its another power looser, i.e 2 and a half diameter is for turbo cars etc

i had the 1.6 Mirage Asti Mivec and with a decat, RS manifold as standard (thats the bigger one on the Mirages found on Rally spec mivecs), Fujitsubo Cat back and NGK Iridium plugs and leads i went from 168bhp to 172bhp! about a grands worth of mods

so it goes to show ya BHP costs big money no such thing as cheap extra (reliable) power.

as the lads said drop a bit of weight, aircon weighs 16 odd KG i believe, spare wheel and tools another 10+ odd kg. it wont give ya extra BHP but it'll lighten her up and render your car more responsive. Carbon parts are good for this, a carbon bonnet would save ya alot of weight as the standard ones are heavy. keeping in mind the FTO is a fairly light car as it is and ya dont want it hopping off the road when ya hit bumps in the road etc

btw.. I got quoted 1500gbp for a nos installation last time I spoke to a so called "specialist"..

He got throughly offeded when I told him that that wasn't proper tuning..

I dont care what anybody says..Nos on it's own is not clever..

eastcoastcustoms I think it was..

His point that it was the most cost effective power increase is probably right tho.. dont know it's something you'd consider..

your right. it is not proper tuning, its only a matter of time before you'd fry the engine internals with NOS, unless the engine is rebuilt to cope with that sort of pressure

Realistically you have to ask yourself would you notice the difference in BHP a modest budget would bring to a GR.
The lads are talking about "adding lightness" but would you want to drive a car with no air-con, spare wheel, tool kit or back seats?
I know I wouldn't.

I'm all for getting the best out of the car so if it was me then I'd stick with a good filter (maybe backed up with CAI as the standard set up is already gone).
Oil and plug change can't hurt and if your budget allows then a free flowing exhaust is nice too.

ya as Bernard said i wouldnt like driving without air con and it all stripped, i think i will just invest in a nice bodykit/splitter combo, anyone here know a good place to look besides ebay, id be doing a mix of splitters and bumpers i think depending on how it looks coz i dont want to buy a full bodykit, their too expensive.

I found RB performance good to deal with, no idea what their bodykits are like though.
