Postby DirtyLopez » Sun Mar 04, 2007 10:37 pm

Hi lads,
I`m going to change the oil in my Mitsi
One simple question... what oil should I use? I know synthetic will be the best, but what parametres?

People have their own preferences for motor oil, I've only ever put Castrol GTX Magnatec 10W/40 (semi) into FTOs. Search the forum.....

I'm a gastrol man meself.. works great and you can get it almost anywhere.

Did one oilchange with Shell-super-deluxe-mega-ultra-power-somethinginayellowcan-extra-slippery-oil..

And I dont care what anybody says - I felt the difference..

Castrol all the way :-)

I have used 5W 40 and 0W 50 - both fully Synth - but as CJ says anything from 15W 40 upwards to 0W 50 should do the trick though I'd only put 0W 50 into a very healthy FTO engine as its quite thin.

Sorry to raise this one from the dead again... I put in 5w 40 fully synth the first time I did an oil change 2 months ago. I think I wil use 10w 40 next time though. I know people like fully synthetic oil, but I think the 5w is a little bit light. My mechanic also reckoned although the tappets were not loud they would be quiter than they are now with 10w 40. He thinks 5w is a little light. After seeing CJs post now about using 15w 40 I am defo going up to 10 to give it a try.

cheers all

where do you buy this? anyone recommend a good outlet to purchase from. Thing I dislike about some of these oils is they come in 4litre or 4.5litre containers when you need at least 4.5L for a change. :) I like the 5Litre containers which leaves you a bit for top ups etc.
10w 40 fully synth sounds good though... probably 65euro a pop is it?

i got mine in southside motors. their prices fluctuate alot, depends who is on counter at time of purchase
i hate to plug this crowd, but halfords do it too, its called "mobil S", will have to check that though when i get home, think i paid €65, not too sure though as me memory is fading fast, getting old and life is but a distant blur

I copied this from a Q&A I downloaded ages ago:

More on oil - here's an email from Mobil courtesy of Paul Therman;
[from the Technical Manager for Mobil Oil]
The Mitsubishi FTO is a high tech engine with the latest design and best materials in construction. When new, the engine is clean and tolerances are fine. Common sense suggests that to keep it like this and in tune for best performance you have to use a quality lubricant. The most stable products on the market and those which are being chosen by manufacturers for extended service are fully synthetic PAO (PolyAlphaOlefin). This includes Castrol SLX, Esso Ultron and Mobil 1. These products are extremely stable in extremes of performance. Next consideration is viscosity. At the low temperature end you need a 0W to give the best flow around the engine and ability to satisfy hydraulic tappets and variable valve timing. Note: 0W is not thin when cold. It is just thinner than higher numbered oils, in fact it is around 10 times thicker at 20 degrees than the oil is when at 100 degrees. For best high temperature performance you need an oil which has a High Temperatre High Shear (HTHS) rating of 3.5 minimum. This will usually mean a 40 weight oil. The high quality base oil and strong additive package make sure the oil does not shear and become lower than this figure. If it does, you have wear at best and siezure at worst. So there is the case for Mobil 1 0w-40. If it were my road car, and I drive enthusiastically! I would use Mobil 1 0W-40. However if you do not have low temperature situations, or care not about start up fuel economy, and run your FTO as an ultimate balls out rally car, then Mobil 1 Motorsport at 15W-50 may be the way to go to give you ultimate protection at the limit (thicker oil film at highest temperature and power). For your interest the product being promoted by Mitsubishi dealers (Castrol Magnatec) is offered to maximise profit potential from a relatively inferior cheap product. It is a mineral oil with a small percentage of non PAO synthetic to allow the not so low rating of 10w. Sure it will work and the engine will not sieze up. But consider the longer term !! Why do Castrol have a top tier SLX grade. And why are they launching a 0W-40 SLX onto the market. To copycat Mobil 1 0W-40 !!

I've read a lot of conjecture and blurb over the years from 'chemists' and the like in the petrochemical industry, its tough seperating the fact from fiction. All I know is that 'inferior cheap' Magnetec has been used in my GPX for the last 6 years and it hasn't blown up yet!

Last time I didn't use Magnatec my engine DID blow up.. *

*engine blowup not related to choice of oil at all.
