Rear brake pads??

Postby Bernard » Mon Mar 23, 2009 10:16 pm

I just brought the car out for a spin, 5 minutes up the road and back.
When I got out I noticed a smell and a ticking sound (like the indicators) coming from the driver's side rear wheel.
I checked the pads and they seem low, more so on the driver's side.

I'll be ordering some pads tonight but thought I'd ask if worn pads would account for the whole wheel being warm too?

Not that I would have thought, when my pads were worn I got the screeching noise from the pad, as a result of the pad wearing and exposing the metal indicator. But didnt think the whole area was hot. One of the bolts isnt after seizing shut is it?

Ah Feck, I'll have a look in the morning.

The pads are worn down to around the indicator line so I don't mind buying them, I was hoping that's all it was though.
There's always something

Just make sure the calipers are working properly and that the top or the bottom isnt after sticking. Be careful if opening them with a screwdriver or something cause forcing them open could blow the brake fluid back up the lines and blow the lid off the reservoir in the engine bay putting a nice mark in your bonnet. Put something over the lid just in case that does happen, prob wont but just to be sure!

Might be your caliper sticking a small bit bernard,

Same thing happened with mine a while back on passenger side,
Ticking noise
And the alloy felt hot all round but driver side was fine,
Would be no harm sticking a caliper service pack in with your order,
There only 24 i think.

Cheers lads, I might hold off ordering 'til the morning.
If I can't spot what's wrong I'll drop it over to the mechanic, it might save paying P&P twice.

Two possibilities spring to mind Bernard.
1. seized caliper, would explain why offside pads are more worn than nearside, jack the offside rear wheel up. With handbrake off try spinning wheel by hand, should rortate relatively unhindered, significant resistance felt would indicate seized caliper. OR
2.Worn wheel bearing, while wheel is raised feel for play by grasping wheel at 12 and 6 rock to and fro then 9 and 3 no lateral movement should be felt. :D

Yup just to back up what other guys said, i had the exact same problem! was due to back brake caliper sticking, the ticking noise in mine was the metal cooling down as it was heating the disc so much!!, kind of pinging sound.

Swapping the brake caliper was fairly handy, i would suggest purchasing a piston wind back tool or else use a snipe nose pliers to wind it back, it'll be a female dog if you try it on a sticky piston.

Ye were spot on lads.
Rust on the piston caused it to stick, all sorted now though.

New pads on their way anyway.
