Hi,

I'm not happy with the way the front end feels on the fto.
I'm guessing it's down to the new front shocks the cowboys fitted when i bought the car.. i.e screw on .. wheel on .. see you later.

I was wondering can anyone recommend a good place for me to get this work done at a relatively low cost if possible?

Dave McCann in Coolimine industrial estate (out near the blanch centre) - they have laser alignment equipement and are as good as the best you'll get in ireland. I had my old FTO and recently my Golf done there and both times the difference after was amazing!

4 wheel alignment is €65

You'll need to book the car in and will get them on 8202221

Russ - Do you have coilovers on the back and normal dampers and springs on the front? What dampers and springs went on the front - OE spec or something else?

There was fancy cil over shocks on front which were faulty so i believe that they were replaced by OEM's but can't be sure as no faith in dealer tbh. Can you recommend somewhere else also? Near Sandyford area at all?

That seems pretty good, just read a post on ftooc.org, talking about CMS over there doing it for £94!

If I were you I'd ask the dealer the question what dampers (Genuine Mitsi FTO, KYB,Bilstein etc)or springs were fitted (where the springs lowered as per Tein, Eibach, Apex etc) and mention to them you have a problem - they should not have handed over a car to you with questionable handling.

I would not be too sure how an FTO would handle with low coilovers on the back and standardish dampers and springs on the front - might look a little weird as well with the back on its hunkers and a gap between the front wheels and arches.

funny you shoul mention that beacuse it does look slightly raised on the front. To be honest i really don't want to go anywhere near the dealer again.... most unprofessional.. imagine asking to use the bathroom and been told to go out the back and go between the cars.... CLASSY!!

As MfFTO has already said it's not a good thing if you're running the car with shortened shocks at the rear and standard shocks at the front. Apart from the obvious issues of height difference and resulting imbalances the damping would be totally different. All this will have a real negative effect on the handling.

My advice is get Paul Nolan to look at the car and see what he thinks - he's a lot of experience with FTO's so should be able to give you good advice.

Wouldn't really bother with the Mitsi dealers either - just find a good mechanic that knows his stuff - Paul Nolan being a case in point for you guys based in Dublin.

sorry to hear your woes about that car, but i did warn everyone on this site about the car and the dealer you brought it off, thats why i buy direct in the first.

but your well within your rights to bring car back and demand an identical or similar replacement pair of front shocks, get them to source a replacement pair, BUT DONT LET THEM FIT THE SHOCKS

I wouldn't worry about it too much - it may cost you a bit to get it running sweet but it'll be worth it in the end - not many manual vR's around

Yip - they go on no hassle - You'll have a bit of interest in them as well.

Here we go again....

Russ, don't let him put you off, getting leather installed is one of the best mods I've undertaken on an FTO, at the end of the day, its a personal choice. That said, red seat covers are rare enough, if you do consider selling them and you want to make a few quid, stick an ad on the FTOOC with a view to driving people towards an ebay auction.
