Replacement lights and bulbs\central locking question

Postby Jay_TLR » Fri Jan 12, 2007 2:48 pm

Hi All,
I should introduce myself. I'm Jay, I live just outside Drogheda and I don't have an FTO. I'm a motorcyclist, but my misses has one. She has a silver 97 GX. She's the first owner since it left Japan and over the last few months I've been working away fixing all the little problems that comes with a car lying up over in Japan for god knows how long.

We had the ISC problem which I replaced, I gave it a complete service(oil and air filter, oil change, spark plugs, brake\clutch fluid changed and rotated the tyres), I had to sort out one of the headlights which was fogged(A bit of rubbing compound sorted that one), and the washer nozzles were blocked as well and the garage she bought it from replaced the timing belt.

At the moment there's only a few niggly things wrong with the car.

1) The remote central locking. If you lock the car with the key the central locking works. If you press the button on the key nothing happens. I've already replaced the battery in the key. What I want to know is if there's a way to re-sync the key to the reciever in the car. I've already had the reciever out and had a look at it. There's a switch on it which looks like it might be used for synch-ing with the key. Does anybody know how to do this?

2) My misses would also like to replace the front round orange indicators for clear ones and replace the orange indicators in the pods in the facelift bumber for clear ones as well. Does anyone know specifically where I can get parts that will replace these directly and not cost a bomb?

3) One of the dip bulbs has gone in the car. I need a replacement. When I took it out it was a PIAA bulb with a black plastic housing attached. Do they seperate or is it one piece. If it's one piece where can I get a replacement and are they expensive?

4) Finally, I need the hosing for under the bonnett for the washer nozzles. I managed to tear the passenger side hosing just before the nozzle trying to see if it was blocked and the misses managed the same with the other side a week later. Does anyone who might be breaking an FTO have these parts lying around? PM please... money waiting.

Thanks for any and all help you guys can give....

Jay

BTW, cool little community you guys got here. I keep expecting to see my misses listed in the SPOTTED section.

For #2 for the front indicators I used MG ZT indicators and the relevant parts of this guide http://www.fto-ireland.com/faceliftguide.html
Here are my pics to illustrate a bit more http://www.cars.gctranslations.co.uk/FT ... cators.htm
For the side repeaters many people have used the D speed ones, there was a group buy in the FTOOC for £40, not sure if it's still going (but you should be a member to participate in group buys)

For #3 you need 9006 bulbs, they come with the black plastic where the connector is. Camskill will surely have the standard bulbs. Or it would be a good idea to upgrade to HIDs. I couldn't see a thing at night and now I can see the light!!! (excuse the pun  ) :)

1 - installed an alarm with a remote locking thing on it, so does the same thing. Would recommend getting a decent alarm installed.

2 - for the wing indicators, there's a few around, d-speed do clear ones, and there's often replacement side indicators on ebay. Check out funky styling, red dragon styling and Hostile performance for lots of bits and bobs.

For mine I got some Ralliart white plastic ones (same as original except white) with clear lenses, and painted the part around the lense to match the car colour. Not the best pic but you get the idea - clicky

3. I'm never 100% sure if I have them the right way around, but I think its 9006/HB3 for the dipped lights, 9005/HB4 for the heads, but double check. You can get bulbs on http://www.powerbulbs.co.uk fairly reasonably too if you can't find anyone local that has them. I'd recommend HIDs too if you're doing any country/dark road driving too though!

4. Steelroe & Ricerocket both break FTOs, but its only a bit of hosing, your local motor factors should have something that would do the trick handy enough?

Thanks for the replys guys.

Just a quick reply to kevinnod.

#3 I'm assuming HIDs setups aren't just replacement bulbs but other hardware as well. Are they expensive?

#4 I tried that but I the specific pieces I need are the right angle plastic joints the join all the hosing together. I'll PM both the guys you mentioned and see if they have the bits.

3 - not really, I think Ricerocket has a special offer on them at the moment... They've got cheaper than they were, when I got them they were I think about Stg£200, but they're less than that now. Some of the other guys on the forum got them since so they'd have a good idea how much they are now.

You could do a search for HID light on google, you'll get a load of hits and should get a good idea what they go.

4 - ah ok, thought it was the hose itself you needed. I got something like that for another little project in Woodies I think... Anyways the lads should be able to sort you out.
