Extra aerial on FTO?!

Postby cheekymunkeydude » Sun Feb 06, 2011 7:46 pm

Hi guys,
I've got a manual 95 GPX and its got what looks like an extra aerial on the nearside front bumper. Theres a button inside by the car that makes it go up and down - you can see a picture of it on this link http://www.jdm-option.pl/forum/viewtopic.php?p=1033 towards the bottom of the spec list, so it looks like it was a factory fitted extra! I have no idea what it does and it has the retractable rear aerial which is connected to the stereo, so I was wondering if anyone can read the japanese description on the web page or if anyone actually knows what it does!!

Cheers in advance

Get rid of it sharpish. It's one of those dumb things on some Jap cars that remind you where the front left corner of your car is. I find my eyes do just fine for this purpose ;-)

If you're vertically challenged then they're useful.
Very common on japanese cars of all sizes.
Look awful though.

I would leave it well alone im guessing theres not to many fto`s knocking around with this still intact makes it a bit special in my book even if it is pointless.

Well,i took driving lessons in Japan. All cars i used on driving school(a taxi style old toyota) had that thing so you dont hit the car when you park.Only for noobs as you can tell, actually only taxis or oldmen cars have that thing here in Japan.
Btw,its rare,so if i was you i should leave that thing on. :)
I'm spanish, sorry if my english is so poor,i learned it at school when i was a kid and i forgot almost all of it lol

Thanks for the replies! I had no idea why they'd bother having 2 aerials, but I suppose for little guys it kinda makes sense!! I thought it was going to be some horrific flag mast or something equally as tacky for their little japanese flags to fly proud on!!
Really appreciate the replies though!
Also just out of interest - has anyone here replaced the cambelt themselves? I've done the aux belts (which I know is hardly a major engineering task!) but the cambelt is due in the next 10K and looking in to it, the toughest part just seems to be agreeing on the timing!! Does anyone know if there is a walkthrough/guide to changing the cambelt, as some places it says about the teeth being half a tooth out and others just seem to go with the conventional mark the cam gears against the engine block and rebuild from there!
Also I'm going to replace the half moon cam seals as they are weeping a bit, and was wondering again if there is any guide to replacing those?
Thanks again for the help!

Hi Mark,

There's a couple of posts on cam belt changes on here.. I'm pretty sure I've seen a full writeup with pictures and all somewhere..
try the search function.

By the way - most (maybe all - not 100% sure) FTOs already have two aerials. One is the automatic retracting one that comes out of the rear quarter panel, the other is embedded in the rear window glass for about the top 25% of the glass.

Yup, mine only has the rear windscreen one. Which actually interferes with my ipod dock when I turn on the rear demisters, as the dock is tuned into the radio, and the demister clouds the signal so I get severe static and a sore head.
