Am I over-reacting here

Postby pergau » Thu Sep 14, 2006 1:52 pm

I was listeming to the news at one and they were doing a big piece about two drivers who were fined €2,000 each for driving at 193k (120mph) They were weaving through traffic which is, I admit, very bad at that speed. The thrust of the coverage, though, was that it was the speed that was bad.

I think that driving through traffic at that speed is stupid, but if you are on an open road, is 193, that bad?

note:I haven't de-restricted my baby.

trhough traffic it's just stupid driving that fast - not only are you risking your own life, but also that of those around you.

If you're on an open road with nothing around you - no side roads maniac can jump out from..then I say by all means stick the boot down..

Still the law is the law is the law..if you get caught doing 200kmph it doesn't matter how clear the road is..you're still screwed..

If you KNEW that there was nothing there, and you'll get away with it fine, but how many roads are there in the country that you can be sure nothing else is going to arrive onto the road all of a sudden? Some old dear comes onto the road, minding her own business but only doing 30mph, this guy comes around the corner behind her at 120mph...

If it got around that it was 'ok' to drive at those speeds you'd have loads of people doing it, even when it wasn't actually a wide empty road, so they have to be seen to be nailing anyone who does it I reckon.

The 200kph these guys were doing was on a by-pass which in my opinion is not really newsworthy. I drove in the UK for 5 years and regularly saw guys doing these kind of speeds on motorways. If the road is wide and clear and free of traffic and the only person you are going to kill is yourself then I wouldn't consider this to be morally wrong as opposed to legally wrong.
