Dyno results

Postby Bernard » Wed Jul 28, 2010 2:55 am

I got the car tested at sleek the other day, thought I'd share the results.

From Youtube.com

The results were a little disappointing, although in the car's defence the run was stopped (@7000RPM) while the power was still rising.
What concerns me is there was a dip in power when Mivec kicked in, as you can see in the graph.

It's not like Mivec failed because you can hear the change in engine note in the video.
Can anyone shed any light?

Think it should also be pointed out that thats the power at the wheels and not the fly just in case anyone is thinking how low it is.

True, I forgot to mention that.
Even so, allowing 30-35 BHP for transfer loss and another few had the test continued to higher revs, I'm still well down on power.

Being generous, I'm down about 20BHP. I'd expect to be down some over the years but 20?!

First things first, I'll do a diagnostic and see what's returned.

Hmm - I'd take the result with a pinch of salt Berno. As you say power was cut at 7000 - you should be reaching peak power in a mivec at around 7800-8000rpm so I reckon theres still a bit more in it. Also they had the dyno in shootout mode so that the same variables would apply to all cars hence why I was also showing about 20bhp down (at the wheels) than another Dyno Dynamics dyno just a few weeks ago. I reckon they had the dyno set at a fairly heavy level so that the conditions would be the same for all cars on the day and comparisions could be made against each other rather than seperate variables inputted for each car.

For the record - I recorded 329bhp at the wheels (probably about 400bhp flywheel) - and a couple of weeks ago recorded 350bhp at the wheels (circa 420bhp) - both on dyno dynamics rollers. Its really about comparing to whats there on the day - I noticed a LOT of guys going away from the rollers with a disappointed look on their faces. To be fair to West Coast Performance they didn't bullshit the figures - they could have manipulated them and given silly flywheel readouts.

I reckon a rolling road meet should be targeted for some time this year - maybe to West Coast performance guys in Tralee - and do the Ring of Kerry and/or tunnel runs.

As I said to you re the mivec point on the graph which should pick up significantly at mivec - I have seen this previously on the UK forum - I can't remember the reason as to how its happens - you could check on the UK forums (I know you can no longer view unless a paid up member - so use http://www.archive.org/web/web.php ).

Berno, is your FTO delimited? If not then that would go some way towards explaining the result.

As far as I know it is.
The previous (UK) owner was a trackday nut so I can't see him leaving it limited.

Assume it reads in MPH? If so, then I would suspect the limiters gone. I've seen MIVEC FTOs rev up to 8.2k on the dyno, that sudden drop off looks like you've hit the limiter though....

You would have heard it hit the limiter though wouldn't you? The mivec kicked in, you could hear it, but there was no hissing from the limiter.

I don't think that's the case.
The drop came at about 5.5K RPM (when MIVEC engaged) but it started climbing again until 7K.
The only reason it didn't rev past 7K is the tester decided to stop
In normal driving she'll go into the red, no problem.

It was the first time I've had the car tested and my inexperience showed, next time I'll be sure to get it redlined.

I've just ran a diagnostic.
The ABS light gave one long burst followed by three short ones.
Can you translate that for me?

EDIT: (search was my friend)
It looks like the intake air temperature sensor.

what way does your man do the test?
does he run it in 1st gear or go up to a specific gear?
