upgraded brakes?

Postby joe 90 » Mon Nov 29, 2004 5:34 pm

Lads my brakes front and back need to be done and Im looking to upgrade both of them :) I wouldnt mind slightly better braking but dont want to spend an absolute fortune on them. Ive been checking out Camskill and the prices are fairly good but i dont know which type to go for! Any ideas on what is best suited for a GR :?:

As regards the rears, unless the disks are badly worn, just use a decent set of pads, such as EBC. Up front, I'd recommend drilled and groved disks (the drilling cools things down while the grooves prevent the disk glazing over by sweeping away pad material) with the likes of EBC red stuff ceramics, Green Stuff V4's or Pagids, personally, I find the latter a bit on the dusty side but they have a good bite. You may as well do a full fluid change, consider Dot4 or Dot5.1. At this stage, all you can do is replace the brake lines with stainless steel hoses. All of the above should improve braking without breaking the bank ;)

I find that the GR single pot brake setup up front is pretty bad at the best of times, another option is to get yourself a set of twin pot GPX calipers and mate them to GPX disks, little bit of work but it would really help things out in the braking dept.

The GPX front brake calipers are 2 pot as against the GR's 1 pot, and the discs are slightly larger, that would probably be the easiest cheapest way of upgrading your brakes methinks?

I haven't got a chance to look at the others so dunno what they're like though.

I have a second set of GPX Calipers and Disks for sale if you are interested. One set ready for collection by Kevin.

Forgot to say the GPX calipers will bolt straight to a GR and GS.

I changed the fluid to DOT 5.1 and SS hoses made a noticable difference. And definetly a set of good quality Pads are a must.
