Engine & G/Box Conversion?

Postby The Flea » Mon Apr 11, 2005 3:47 pm

Gents

I need to call on your Vast knowledge once again.
As you may know i am having problems getting my G/box fixed on the 1.8GS.
I have however located a tiptronic G/box for the 2.0L and wanted to know if i can fit this to the 1.8L?
If not, i can have the whole engine and G/box for the 2.0 mivec and wanted to know if it was possible to do the full conversion and change the whole lot?
If any one knows anything on this, wheather it has been done before or can be done please let me know. I'd like to hear your views on this.

I thought you had a manual car at present - I don't think you should be talking about a Tip box at all if this is the case.

Is the transmission on the mivec a manual or tip??

First things first, the V6 Mivec tip box is different to the GS box, so it won't mate up to the engine. Dropping in a Mivec engine is one hell of a job, there may be other variables that needs to be considered that I'm not qualified to talk about, the drivetrain will most certainly need to upgraded, the ECU will need to be swapped out which means a new wiring loom, the brakes will need to be swapped out for GPX disks and calipers, the more you explore this option, the more it starts looking like a costly one. It would be a whole lot cheaper to bring the car to a proper gearbox specialist (such as A&M in Dublin) and have them recon the box, it might cost you €1500 but it would be a much easier route to take.

I agree with CJ here - I wouldn't be surprised if the problem wasn't as bad as you imagine.

A lot of probelms with the FTO box seem to be based around the scnyromesh and cables and linkages.

Pull off center console and check that cables are attached to the gearstick - one on the side, and one on the bottom.

Also check the linkage under the bonnet on top the gearbox - this part has been known to go and is cheap to replace.

And if the worst comes to worst I know where you can get a manual box off a MIVEC, not 100% sure if they are exactly the same or noe. Get the model number off your own box and we can do some searching.
