gearbox is acting up

Postby Gerry » Wed Jan 14, 2009 8:52 am

Hi Guys,

A friend of mine has an fto tip gr.
The gearbox is acting up of late. When he puts it in reverse
their is a delay (about two seconds) then a jerk and then it will reverse, also when
he puts it into drive their is no delay or jerk as such but when he
has to come to a stop, just before he stops it will jerk and then stop
ok.
Check atf level, was ok.
Replaced atf and filter, same problem.
Checked all connections on box, all ok.
Done diagnostic test, no errors present.

Just wondering if this could be a Torque converter problem or a gearbox
problem.
Have got a spare torque converter and box, don't want to replace them both
as i want to know which component is causing this
Any idea's?
Gerry

If the gearbox sensors aren't throwing up any errors then it could be TC related. IIRC, you'll have to remove the box to get at the TC. When the TC goes, you can't engage drive at all, don't rule out other possibilities.

How does the car behave in Drive / tip mode? Any clunkiness? Any idea what caused the problem, did it appear out of nowhere, was the car being driven hard? What colour was the ATF that came out? Brown = boiled, black = blown TC.

You can test torque converter, there is a procedure in the manual.

Hi,

Cheers for the replies,
To my knolwedge car was looked after well, car drives ok in tip mode, no clunkiness while going up through the gears. The oil that came out was not bad, dark red colour, looked ok.

Done the stall test as per manual, car did not stall before the specificated rpm (2100-2600).
According to manual if it stalls before this value we have a torque converter/engine output issue, look like TC is ok.
Car seems to be stalling higher than the max stall speed spec of 2600rpm which according to manual indicates a line pressure problem or a gearbox slippage problem.

Possibly an oil pump issue? Gerry, I assume that the diagnostic you undertook involved grouding out the diagnostic connector and watching the 'N' light for codes (1hz = no logged sensor problems).

Hi,

Yea CJ done the diagnostic test, no errors present.
Im kinda thinking along the lines of Line Pressure in the box ,which as
you say could be the pump itself.
Might replace box at this stage as their are no codes or indicators to what
may be causing this problem.

Cheers
