Diesel FTO

Postby JD » Wed Feb 18, 2004 7:57 pm

I am the only person with a diesel FTO???

I was under 'extreme' pressure today in the petrol station and pumped 12 euro worth of Deisel into the FTO

What a f%$&ing plonker!!!

I stopped and got a mecahnic from a local garage and he said to fo fill it up with ordinary and it should be OK - might be a bit spluttery but it will be diluted enough. I did and in fairness it was Ok and I got home no problem.

I now have a mix of 12euro deisel and 32 euro unleaded. Should I drain the lot and get rid of it or can I drive it untill it's gone like the mechanic said - any ideas if it will cause any damage :?:

Cheers

JD

I've just been talking to a diesel specialist and he said that it s the worst thing that you can do. If it was a pre-injection car it would just smoke like hell but as you already sort of know there isn't a whole lot you can do.Keep filling it up with petrol and don't drive it too hard for a while. There probably isnt much point draining it as it's probably already in the system.Very easy mistake to make.

I put 9 euro worth of diesel into the GPX at one stage before I noticed what pump I was at (damn hang-overs), I filled her up with unleaded, and it ran fine. The only thing I noticed is that the engine lacked grunt.
Wait til you're nearly empty and fill her up again.

I've put the wrong fuel in - what do I do?

The bill can be around £100 for some garages to drain your tank but lets think. How much wrong fuel went into how much right. If for example 5 litres of diesel went into a tank containing 25 litres of correct petrol there is no problem. Fill the tank with correct fuel to further dilute the diesel and all will be well. You may notice exhaust smoke but that is all. How about 10 litres of diesel into an almost dry petrol tank - no problem push the car over to the petrol pump and fill up with petrol - the diesel will be diluted out before neat diesel reaches the engine.

Thanks Guys,
It's all gone now and she's runnign as sweet as ever.

But here's a puzzler. I was talking to a local mechanic and he told me to change my oil immediately. He said my oil level will be sky high after putting the deisel in.

I didn't believe him so never asked him why - but I checked my oil level this morning and its about three inches above the high mark on the dipstick.

I can't work out how this would happen - any ideas???

I'm not sure but could it have something to do with compression? Is the compression in a diesel engine much much higher than that of a petrol engine?

Yes, diesel engines generally run at approx double the comprssion ratio of a petrol engine, typically 20:1 or higher.

Then I would imagine that this extra workload on the engine has displaced some oil. Any engineers want to give a more detailed explanation?

Guys,

another bit of info on this, something I heard from someone who used to work for a major petroleum company, the tolerance level for the companies is about 0.5% contamination for petrol, so any more than that and they'll pull that 'batch' of product from circulation.

I'm told diesel operates at a higher temperature, so your engine is liable to overheat if there's diesel in there. Also, you're likely to be pretty significantly down on power, although you guys have done that so you'd know exactly how much down ye were.

All in all sounds like a pretty bad plan...

Thanks all,

I have to assume, given the laws of physics etc. and the fact that it is unliley that the oil 'expanded' that the increase in volume of the oil was the result of some of the diesel getting into the oil somehow. I can't work out how this could happen.

The oil I took out had lost a lot of its viscosity and I had only replaced it just befor Christmas. There was also loads of it - i.e. there was much more than 5ltrs. so it doesn't appear to have been the result of additional internal pressure 'pushing out' the oil (however that could happen).

Anyway - still curious - I don't like not being able to comprehend how something works :?

Oil

Postby Muad_dib77 » Mon Aug 29, 2005 11:56 am

The oil would behave rather differently at the higher temps caused by the diesel.
That's the best I can think of..I hope it makes sense :-)
