headlights

Postby karlf » Mon Oct 09, 2006 5:15 pm

Was thinking bout getting the inside of the headlights sprayed. The black bit, think it might look good if it matched the rest of the car. My sis's fella reckons this mightn't be possible. He thinks that if the seal is broken it'l allow moisture in and cause condensation. Does anyone know anything about this???

The Headlight aren't really sealed - of you look at your high beams you'll notice that the bulb is actually poking in through a hole in the reflective material.

A few people have their black bits sprayed (cough) Dave from the forum here is one. (Blue fto in limerick pictures)..

If it's done right it looks the dogs danglies.

You need to remove the light pods and put them in an oven @ 100 deg C or so for 15 mins - this is sufficient to melt the sealant and will allow you to prise the lights apart. Reverse the procedure to reseal and most importantly, do it at your own risk!

HAHA, this guy cracks me up.

I wouldn't chance sticking my lights in an oven, not on your life.

Its the tried and trusted way rsg! I've done it twice - once with the FTO front lights and the second time with the RX-7 rear light clusters - as long as you're careful and check on the light units every few mins it works a treat. As I said, do it at your own risk.

I need eye crutches!

I wouldn't be too keen on baking my lamps either tbh - but apparently it's not really that dangerous.

I had a water ingress problem on one of the front lights and its been driving me nuts over the past year - time to do some cooking, FTO style!

After plenty of messing trying to get the light unit off the car without completely removing the front bumper, I stuck the unit in the oven @ 125C for about 10 mins. I got a couple of old wood chisels and started prising apart the light, the glue started to set again before I had it apart so I threw it back in the oven for another 5 mins and went at it again with the chisels. Once I got it apart, I put the rear section back in the oven for a few mins, then I took it back out and put a bead of clear silicone around the edge (on top of the glue). Front section back in the oven for 3 or 4 mins and it was ready to mate up with the other half of the light unit.

I let it cool down for an hour or so and threw it back onto the car (more messing with the front bumper and various brackets to get the light to fit properly). I washed the car soon afterwards without any sign that water was leaking in - happy days!

Man CJ - That looks like a sticky mess! :-)

I was trying to remove my headlights as well so that I could sort out the peeling issue - but I gave up..Just too much hassle (and it started to rain quite heavily..)

Are there Nuts/Bolts that aren't imeddiately visible??

Yes, theres one in particular just under the middle of the light as it meets the bumper - a little ballicks to get at! If I were removing both lights, I'd take the whole bumper off - you'll save time in the long run and the re-fit will be easier without stressing the bumper or brackets too much.
