14mpg ?!? OMFG!!

Hi,

I just did a fuel 'economy' calculation on my 95 GR tiptronic.

Filled it up, reset the trip meter, did 79.3km of purely city travel, filled it up again, and it took 12.98 litres to refill the tank.

This converts to 14mpg

Admittedly, most of the city trips were around 1-3km each, and I did 'lead-foot' it a few times. But it's still surprisingly low mpg.

Also, admittedly, each time I filled the tank, I just filled to the first automatic cut-off. With this, and the small amount of fuel, there's some margin for error.

Is it likely my engine is a bit under par, needing work? I did change the oil, oil filter and air filter over the weekend, but that's the extent of my mechanical skills at present. Are there other things I need to look at (apart from my driving)?

i thought mine was really bad but i found out that my gauge is faulty and its not adding miles to the clock.... so i thought i was getting 200 but i was getting over 300

Was in france a week ago, did over 600km until the petrol light came on, thought that was pretty good!! now the roads were unbelievable, surprised me as i hit the mivec a good few times:),, what you think?

You have to fill the tank right up to the mouth of the filler cap each time. The way you are doing it in not accurate.
And to rely on the filler pump back pressure stop to give you a fuel level, remember that can also be activated at any time while filling the tank.
I would doubt ant FTO would be that thirsty!

Another thing has you FTO a converter chip fitted to the speedo, you sure it is not accumulating on the ODO in miles and not KM

My speedo is calibrated in km/h. Surely my odo and tripmeter must also be in km. Surely?

I decided I'd start writing this down after the recent discussion.
Last fill, I used 48l of statoils best and got 431km = 11.1l/100km
(someone please tell me what mpg this is so I can vote - haven't a clue about old measures)

I filled up with Maxol E5 and will report the change on the next fill

Sound advise, suggest you work out consumption based on a full tank, the result will be more accurate. I was averaging 14mpg in the RX-7, it ran so rich, you couldn't stand behind the thing @ idle without feeling sick. I'd be very surprised if you're seeing these sort of figures with the FTO. Whats the octane rating of your fuel?

I swore to myself that I wouldn't care about fuel consumption when I bought the FTO and it's not the reason for posting in this thread.

I'm more interested in finding out whether she likes the E5 milk rather than the standard stuff - so far so good, feels better but could be a placebo.

Thats not any better than I'm getting from the 350Z which weights an extra 250/300kgs and has an extra 1500cc and 80bhp.

Pretty sure I had much better economy than that in my last FTO.

Ddo you drive mostly in the city or on decent stretches of road?

I was getting about 22mpg in heavy Dublin traffic which I don't think is too bad. Especially since I like to bring out the Mivec when I'm not in traffic.

I average about 30mpg when driving to and from Dublin and Longford every weekend and in town/city driving I average around 20-25.

I use the Maxol E5 all the time now. I was very surprised at the MPG of my car I was expecting a lot worse to be honest. My parents 1.6 Primera does about 35-40 MPG so in comparison to that the FTO is quite good!

How is that exactly? - this seems to be a common misconception on a lot of the modifed car forums - Perhaps as most of the cars the guys are running don't actually benefit from using higher RON fuel.
If your FTO runs better on a higher RON fuel type then it should be more efficient - better performance AND better economy.
The RON benefits of E5 should far outweight the slight drop in the calorific value of the fuel.

Yeah that makes perfect sense, its all about increased efficency.. the only problem is that if you do believe your car is going better you try to keep convincing yourself!! leading to overuse of lead slippers!
Want to try some of this E5 stuff myself..just none around ballincollig at the mo?
