my car sounds like a vw beetle?

Hi Guys,
Would anyone be able to advise me as to why my Mivecs exhaust note has suddenly changed,sounding like a bettle?
The car does seem to have lost a small bit of powerbut not too much.
I have checked,oil,water,exhaust etc.
This happened once before for about an hour then went away,now its constant.

Check plugs, leads, airfilter and cat as a starting point....

Thanks CJ,it turned out to be my alternator,replaced and after a few days the car is back to normal.

Good stuff, a dodgy alternator can stop the MIVEC engaging (I wouldn't have expected it to impact on exhaust note though..)

Totally confused now lol.
The problem is back???????

my exhaust note changed when i done my oil lol.

I reset the ecu and replaced the stepper motor and she is all good again!
Thanks for all the info and stepper motor replacement instructions.
