Engine oil discussion

Postby Dragonheart » Thu Aug 20, 2009 10:20 am

I'd run 10W40 through the engine first just to be sure its used to it before going to 5W40 or 5W30.

Not sure I understand the logic here Marty, the engine will operate just fine if you swap grades. While I'm on the subject, theres no need for engine flushing either if the oil is changed regularly.

By the way, Welcome to the forum Jay.

The engine if its not used to a viscous oil will use the oil up more quickly, its not dangerous once its checked often. The fella that gives me a hand with the FTO when I need stuff done has a 5 series BMW, he put in 5W30 and noticed that within a short space of time a quarter of the oil was down. He thought it was the oil but put in more regardless for curiousity, it turned out it ran the 5W30 perfect next time, the engine just needed to get used to the grade of oil and the viscousity. He asked around and other mechanics said the same thing.

I still don't understand the logic, you sure you're not confusing the point with a change from mineral to synth (which can be a problem)? I've lost count of the times I've changed oil grades without any ill-effect (all on Jap cars I might add). I've also mixed grades without problem (not often and not particularly recommended). Maybe uber-panzers are a bit finiky about oil....

Uberpanzers? You mean the BMW? Dont know, but I'm not in any rush to use a higher performance than 10W40. For your rex it would prob be different, 5W30 was around when that was out first, when the FTO was first made I dont imagine 5W30 was out and available. Maybe I'm way off here I dont know but for me 10W40 is perfect, for everyday use and for maintaining the engine, its the oil the FTO was supposed to run under so I'm sticking to it.

Topic split, we were going off on a bit of a tangent.

Uberpanzers, slang name for BMWs...

Not strictly speaking - according to Mitsi anyway. Its my preferred choice as well by the way (only because I can't get 10W30 easily). Pulled from the owners manual

The GX came in with 10W30 in the sump and it ran like a dream, possibly better than with the 10W40 semi I replaced it with.

Hmmm, didnt realise that it was in the owners manual. I've asked in motorfactors when I was first checking about the oil for it and they went through their book and under mitsi it had 10W40, another thing is that 10W40 isnt actually mentioned in that extract, any ideas for that?

10W40 semi has been tried an tested over the years in the FTO, its a good choice. You could discuss oil til the cows come home, to a degree, its a personal choice based on experience.

I'm might try changing to 5W30 fully synth, I used to use it in the VR-4 to good effect, it quietened down the tappets well for a thin oil (I used Amsoil, I found Castol Edge or Mobil 1 didn't do such a good job).

It was the Castrol Edge that I was going using before when looking at 5W30. If it works well I'd use the 5W30 all right I reckon in future, would do wonders for the tappets all right, wheres the best place to get Amsoil? Does Oilman do it I wonder?

Indeedin he does, this is the stuff I've used:

http://www.opieoils.co.uk/p-1042-amsoil ... 5w-30.aspx

Remember we also get a club discount from Opie Oils.

if you're on a budget, Fuchs Titan (Supersyn) is another good oil (underrated IMO), I use it in the RX-8 to good effect.

If its under hard acceleration generally, then that might just be a normal exhaust, most will sound different under hard acceleration than when you're just tipping along, or even gentle acceleration. If it happens (much) more notibly at 5500 rpm, mivec would be the obvious suspect.

Even a GR or GX has a noticable roar past 5000 rpm.

Halfords are doing 5l of 5W30 Semi Syn for €19. Gonna give mine an oil change before the drag on Sunday. should be grand. No way I'm spending €54 on the good stuff.

EDIT: Oil change done, oil and filter for €23.50! gotta love Halfords :)
