New Motor Tax

Postby steelroe » Fri May 02, 2008 9:42 am

Just wondered if anyone on here knows if the FTO will be effected by the new "emmision based" tax and VRT systems being introduced later this year.

From what I can see there still doesn't seem to be anything concrete from "gormless" Gormley. Believe their was a debate about it recently and he caused a bit of a storm with his suggestions for what will happen come July.

There still seems to be an issue as to whether the new Co2 VRT rate will apply on cars imported post July 08 though the road tax looks to stay the same. I reckon he's leaving the decision closer to the July deadline to stop a flood of imports pre July.

One things for sure if VRT AND Road Tax apply at the new rate on imported FTO's then there certainly won't be any more FTO's imported to this country.

Needless to say - Its all just a money racket - just another way of getting more money from the motorist.

my understanding of it is that the VRT on imports will be emissions based but the road tax remains cc based.

I believe Gormsless' recent suggestion in the Oireachteas was to also apply the new tax regime to imports - don't think it went down well though.

This is correct, as per the revenue website.
