What do I do? Car Stolen & Recovered

Postby d_andrews78 » Mon Oct 16, 2006 9:18 am

 Hi all,
I have only had my White 95 GS for 3 weeks, and it was stolen last night, found again by the Police in North Belfast, but the problem is it took out a lamp post.
The Damage is what looks like, a new bonnet, bumper, drivers side wing, headlight, locks and steering Colume, radiator and fan, at least.
I've only got TPF&T, will right it off if I claim, and the insurance will go up for the next one but fixing will cost what I got it for?

Oh dear - that sucks!

If I was in your shoes - I'd have a quick look around to see if there was somewhere I could get parts from real cheap.

(Try eBay - I've seen a seller flogging off whole shells for 250gbp)

If that doesn't work out - claim and drive something cheap for a year.

Dunno what the situation is but it can't be right that someone steals your car & crashes it, and you get to pick up the bill!!

If its going to cost you that much to repair it can't be worth it... you'll have a car which was crashed, and noone wants to buy a car thats been crashed, no matter how well it was repaired, so the value of what you end up with will be a lot less than what you paid for it first day.

Hope something comes right, and the POS who stole your car gets his/her just deserts...

Sorry to hear about the car fella :( Before you make any decision, get a quote on second hand parts, you might be able to get it repaired for less than you think.

Thanks for the sugestions, I only got it for 2k but even with cheap parts, it might take near that to put right, the dent of the lamp post is level with the back of the headlight, so guessing a crossmember is needed.
Think I might send it to the race track in the sky.
Try to take some Pics tonight and load them on, for yous to see.

terrible news mate.

given that you only paid 2k for it, it would not be cost effective to fix. Claim off your insurance and start agn. You should get the £2K back from the insurance ok.

Do you have a protected no claims policy?

No took out a New TPF&F Policy for it as I've got a 5dr 206 as well, still need to get the baby seat and the buggy out of the FTO, it was like a weekend car for me.
But even only having owned one for 3 weeks, I will get another one in the future, even a GS can give me so much fun, can't wait to get my hands on a 2L Manual or Auto in the future.

if you are over 25 you will be able to insure it as a second car with aon for abt £300. Might be cheaper to get your payout and then cancel your policy and start agn if you were paying big money with your current insurers.

That sucks. Its even worse that your insurance goes up through no fault of your own if you claim.
Sounds like the best idea is baldtyres suggestion: claim and break.

I'm sorry... ...got something in my eye

talk nicely to the impound yard owner and get access to return any aftermarket stuff back to stock as the insurance company wont give you any extra for it.

Thanks Guys,
Do you know what really sucks, it when you can see the car in the recovery yard from your office window.
And lucky enough the car is still as standard not a bit of aftermarket stuff in it. I didn't even have the time to but in the radio expander, and changed the speedo to MPH on the day it was nicked.
Was only shipped in DEC 05 and had the mot convertions done, and sat around a car lot in Wales for a good wee while I think, as it took a wash or two to get the green moss stuff off the window sills, bottom of the headlight. and the rear spoiler where it joins with the boot lid.

Ah mate - my heart bleeds for you!

You didn't even get a chance to enjoy her!
next time you import one you should consider a GPX - also get yourself an alarm - one that stops the car from starting.

Apparently at one stage you could get alarms with flamethrowers in south africa - might be an idea to import one of those and get your own back.

Bstard twoc'ing scummers - pees me off something fierce!

LMAO! How does everyone know about those? I never knew it made such a big story overseas. (I'm a South African that moved to the Uk a few months back so I have met people who have apparently seen this in action...)

Back to topic, sorry to hear about the car man - thats awful news!

I thought if you make a fire or theft claim it has no effect on your premium.

I think if it's a total loss then they take 2 years off your NCB.
Phoned the Accident Repair place this morning, and the were waiting for the insurance company to reply but it will be a total loss.

Just hope they will pay out enough to get a replacement.

sorry to hear that

Postby karlf » Thu Oct 19, 2006 11:42 pm

Just a suggestion but you could try bringing your car to a scrap yard and see what he'l give you for it. You might still loose out on a bit. The loss you incur on scrapping it might work out less than what it would cost for the increase in your insurance over the years it takes to build back up your NCB. You could put the money into getting a new one.
Or sell the parts yourself (if your able to have the car lying around till its all sold that is). There is always someone looking for parts on here, myself included. You could talk to a member here, called steelroe, about prices etc for the parts, as he scraps alot of FTO's(from what i've read). I'm sure he'd be willing to help, I got bits off him myself and he was very helpful on the phone. If you are selling parts let me know I have a 1.8 gs auto. Sorry if it sounds like i'm trying to profit from your misfortune but that wasn't my intention, was just trying to help.
What ever you do, i hope you don't loose out on too much money, and the little swines get whats coming to them.
Did the police catch them??? If so you could try taking legal action to cover the cost of repairs. I think the parents of these joy riders should be responsible for the damage done. then they might insure that their "little angel" doesn't do it again(or in the first place). Or the kids themselves should be made get a job and their wages used to cover the cost of both the damage they cause and the police and other services used in they recovery of the vehicle.

Karlf Thanks for the Idea. What I done is put the value of the car up by 25% the price I paid for it on the insurance, and looking on ebay most of the cars are going for 2-3K, and traders are looking a good bit more, so I think recovering what I paid for it shouldn't be a problem.
I was thinking of buying it back and breaking it for parts, but wife was very much against that idea.
So looking like I'll be trying to get one out of the larger island across the water.
What is the difference between a GR and a GPX by the way?
