Power steering and altornator belts broke off to day

Postby karlf » Thu Aug 06, 2009 12:35 am

Was on the way home from the gym today and both the p/s and alternator came off the car. Got a bit of a shock (thought it was something more serious) and it was an absolute git getting home with no power steering. Felt like I was driving a tank, I never drove a car with no p/s for more than a couple of seconds just to experience the difference between having it and not. It wasn't a pleasant experience.
So as a result I need some advice. Just wondering could I get these in any motor factors or is it a camskill job. Could do with getting them asap as dont want to be without the car.

Its been a while since I drove one without ps, so cant really remember. By the time I was old enough to drive most cars were at least power assisted. Yeah it was a female dog to drive it home. I got the belts so hopefully get them fitted today or tomorrow depending on when my sis's fella can fit me in.

Is there a guide or how to for doing this? I'm thinking the engine manual might have something, anyone have a page number for it? Sorry I'm being lazy, I could just search through it but to be honest I couldn't be arsed. Thought 'd ask here. Cheers

Thanks for the offer Keith. I should be ok though, my sis's fella is gonna do it. I was just looking to get a diagram of where it round and which one is the tensioner pulley. I'll find out when I get under I suppose. He know's what he's doing anyway so I should be ok.

I think you are missing Miss-enzo's point. The steering rack of a non assisted steering car, is geared to make the steering manageable -although it would still be relatively heavy. In a power assisted set up the steering is much heavier, but due to the assistance it feels much lighter. But if that assistance fails you are left with a much heavier steering set up than an old skool non power set up. Driving the car in this state is dangerous as the effort required to manouvre the car is excessive and people who say things like "what are you complaining about, sure back in my day we had no power steering, don'y be such a wimp" are talking out their ar$e -it has nothing to do with being a 'wimp'. You are not comparing apples with apples so to speak.
Here's a link which explains how to change the belts.

You're not joking there! I was driving a car once when the electrics went as I was taking a sharp corner. Scary

Here's the guide I followed last week to do this in case anyone else needs to do this.

Straightforward enough and you only really need a socket set and fairly flexible arms (which I don't have, hence the scratches and scrapes I now have)

My belts were squeaking so loud I couldn't hear the tappets lol. All changed and cleaned now so i'm happy enough :)
