Postby 5803emma » Tue Aug 05, 2008 6:33 pm

Manual or tiptronic box? I'm assuming its the former. Whats the problem, by the way - can't grab gears, noise from transmission? What lead up to the problem?

I'd prefer a reconditioned manual box to one from a scrapper with 70-80,000 miles on it.

Emma that's unfortunate, it certainly did seem like a gearbox issue when I drove it. It's unfortunate and expensive, however it could be worse -it could be the engine! Does that €700-€800 include supply and fitting?

Colm's logic being better the devil you know, than the devil you don't. And in most cases I'd agree, pick up one in a scrap yard and you don't know what you are getting. However, in this instance you don't have the car very long, and the gearbox has been in that condition, I imagine since day one, it is therefore an unknown quantity -not necessarily any better than one from a scrappy.
I'd image you be looking at about €250 for a 2nd hand gearbox, and about the same again to fit it. Of course you should also have the clutch replaced at this time.

As for picking up a secondhand on for €250, I dont fancy your chances. You would prob have to get it in UK.
Also hard to believe you can get a fully reconditioned gearbox for €700.

Well you'd know, I guess an FTO box is going to be more expensive than a mainstream car

Yep it's manual. I thought it was awful crunchy alright. He said there wasn't a drop of oil in the gearbox  she sounds awful round when you start her and gets really noisy as you progress through the gears. I'm gonna get a second opinion definately, but as I said the guy that checked it is sound as a bell :(

Yeah supply and fitting, if he can get his hands on a gearbox. I think I'm gona go for the recondition based on your advice and what I've been hearing!!

Out of interest, did he fill up the box with oil and drive it afterwards? I appreciate its probably beyond repair but I would be interested to know if filling up went some way towards alleviating the problem?

Ahem! I suggested doing that  Now that you know there's no oil there, driving around with none is a bad idea, especially if you don't have a definite plan of action/timeline for when the repairs will be carried out.
Are you planning to have that box reconditioned, if so you'd want to get some oil in there asap.
