I think they get a few garages to bid on the wreck, and you can match the highest offer. I think this is how it works.

998cckeith was in this situation a few months back.

gpx 95 wrote:Well guys - an update on the stolen FTO saga. Could be completely unrelated but someone just tried to rob mine parked on Maxwell Street off Cork Street, round the back of where I work. They tanned the lock in on the passenger side and tried to get in from there, the alarm went off and someone came out and scared them off.

I only drove in today as I'm heading out to DTAS after work to get two new tyres fitted!

Anyway, I've now to replace the left hand door handle and possibly the lock mechanism so if anybody can point me in the right direction I'd be delighted to know.

And I'd be very wary of where you leave your FTO from now on! Mines has a Toad alarm and immobiliser, think I'll get myself a wheel lock as well now.

Scary stuff guys - it seems like the scum have worked out what a great car the FTO is.

I've started to put the Steering lock on again now at home - might give me an extra 30 seconds to react if the worst happens.

Karl, rather than have multiple threads on teh same topic, I've deleted your new thread and posted your reply here - CJ

Got offered 2500 for my FTO. It a 96 gs Auto 1.8, not exactly happy with it to be honest. I had stuff in the car worth that tools, DVD player, etc. What do people think is that a fair offer? I dont think I'd pick one up for that. Can I insist on getting it fixed? Not sure what that would cost but I reckon more than what they have offered. I think I'd rather that than getting 2500(- 200 excess).

Karl, 2.5k for a 96 Tip GS on its own is a good deal in terms of an insurance payout. In terms of the contents, thats another story. Yout policy was TPF&T right?

It was TPFT. I'm only disappointed because I researched prices for a standard 96 gs auto and was told 4k-4.5k from different garages.(I went with a dealer quote as there are no 96 gs auto on private sale) I thought that that was a bit high myself but I cant see how there is such a difference in prices. I mean I should be able to replace the car at least without having to put another 2k to it to buy another one.

Tell them you are not happy with their valuation of the vehicle. Maybe point them in the directio nof the likes of Carzone in relation to current FTO pricing.

A friend of mine recently had the same problem in relation to a crashed VW van. The insurance company seriously under valued it. He told them that he was not happy and if they could get him a new Van in the same condition with similar mileage for that price he would accept a van rather then cash. His bluff worked, cam back with an offer 2K higher. He did have fully comp though, not sure if thatmade the diff.

Was chatting to the my claim advisor, she said they'd go to 2750 but thats it. I said no to that and she's to get back on to the dept. that comes up with the valuations to see if they'll offer more. I said the same thing with regards to them buying one for 2.5k and replacing it with the car instead of cash and I'l accept that.
She also tried to tell me I can claim for contents of the car through the house insurance. That no car policy covers personnal belongings that are in the car at the time its stolen. Surely that cant be right. Can it?
I'm sure I was told by a friend who's car was robbed with his phone and laptop in it that they were replaced along with the car.

I actually do recall something about car contents coming under house insurance... could be wrong... Leaving Cert business was a long time ago...

Did you put in a valuation figure for your car when you applied for insurance? Hopefully they'll go to 3k at least.
Get out of here Nebulon! No one likes your style...

I did I said 4k as that was what I was told at the time. The claims advisor said that this figure means nothing really, that it goes buy the average value (the book value) for the car.
She also reckons that if I've 2.5k in my pocket and offer that to a fella looking for 4k they'll accept it as 2nd hand cars aint selling at the mo. I can see someone accepting maybe 500 or so less than the asking price (say 4k that I've been quoted) but not 1500 less. Sure they'd be making nothing then. It'd probaly cost them money if they were doing that.

Be very careful in relation to mentioning tools. Your policy is only for social and domestic use. You should not in theory be carrying tools to and from work.
I would bet if you read the small print on your policy it will mention this.

Open to correction here.

I can carry tools in the car I just cant use it as a work vehicle. It would be still classed as social use in this case. Its no different to someone carrying a laptop, or a company phone or something like that.

I know a few people who've claimed for golf clubs and the like being stolen form cars outside of their house, in all cases, claims were made on the house insurance.

Jesus thats mad. Cant work that out at all. The mind boggles. Its in the car but comes out of house insurance, madness. I wonder if thats only if the car is taken from the front garden/garage or is that still the case no matter where the car is. I may have to go investigating.

All of these items in the car do generally fall under home insurance an not your car policy. Read your home policy and you will see there - general stipulation is that all items need to have been locked in the car boot and not visible for anyone to see inside the car.

Sounds like you'd better get on to them sharpish.

Wanted: a price on the following.

Postby karlf » Thu Jan 29, 2009 7:05 pm

I've been offered 2750-200 =(2550) excess for the car. I also have the option of scrapping the car myself and they'll take a further €650 =(1900)off the offer and I have the option of fixing it myself.
In order to do this I need a front bumper (a face lift model if available, might as well seen as I'm replacing it any way) a back bumper, bonet hinges (possibly a bonet also). Dont know if second hand ones are available but all locks, ignition, and boot. All the panels around the steering column.
I cant see it working out that it will cost only 1900 to fix it with parts and labour included. Even doing what (little) I'd be able to myself. I' just tring to work out my options.

Its a possibility though isnt it... Might be worth taking the car and cash, between people on here and ebay I think you could repair it for less... I saw the ignition lock on ebay about an hour a go for a tenner for example, and from what the likes of steelroe, colm and seb might have lying around im guessing you could get everything you need.
Fully functional White GPvR....

Well its either that or accept the cash and car, then try sell the parts myself. Might make more that way  . Had a look at a gpx mivec, took it for a spin so considering an upgrade too. Decisions, decisions. I'd have to put between 800-1000 in to do so. But I'll see what the insurance comes back with.
I also found out the steering lock is broken and there's definately some damage done to the front passenger side wheel, shocks etc from the impact with a kerb(or something similar). Have to bring it in to a garage to find out the extent of it and repair costs.
The hassle of doing all this has to be considered as well, probably more than its worth

No way is the scrap value worth €650. My wifes brother in law bought his damaged 03 golf back off his insurance company today for €300, and by the sounds of it, had less damage than yours.
If you could get if for say €300 than it would be worth it, if not I would leave it unless you are considering fixing it up.
Where is the car et them moment.
If it is at yours the it will cost them to transport it away if you refuse to take it as scrap.
Haggle is the name of the game here.

Well I have the car at my mothers house in Lucan. I had it transported there from Irish Towing Services in ballyfermott/clondalkin area, at no cost to Quinn. I will definately argue with them. I didn't get my courtesy car off them either, which they are supposed to supply for 2 days or until the car is recovered.
I'm going to suggest they give me the 2500 and I'll keep the car as well. If scrap is only 300 it'd have cost them that for moving it and the cost of supplying the courtesy car. I'd be happy enough with that to be honest.

Air con and Mivec system fully working. Full under body underseal. Drives well with good gear changes and no tappet noise on startup. Bodywork in good condition with a few stone chips on the front bumper .

Personally, I'm not mad on the bonnet, each to their own etc. The panel gaps between the bonnet / bumper and front wings / bumper look suspect i.e. impact or not fitted correctly.

Edit: just saw you bought this ;) Good luck with the car....

Cheers CJ but its not bought just yet, as no money exchanged hands its just agreed in principal. I had a check done, think it was the aa, my bro sorted that out as he lives in blackpool. But it passed everything on their checks. I also had a HPI check done and nothing wrong there either.
I agreed a price with the owner and he's agreed to sell. The bonet is off a bit but he told me it needs a bonnet hinge as the one on it is on its way out(already gone)(checks confirmed this). I was warned to check it out myself as the UK MOT is different to ours as they are allowed to have welded bits we're not (something to do with what the engine sits on I cant remember the name of it, just as well I dont have to as my cousin is coming and he does  )
To be honest I'm not mad about the bonet myself, I'd prefer one without the vents on the arches. But it will do for the time being, might even consider changng it for a different one. I'll see what happens. I like it, its just not what I'd have chosen myself. There is one with only the centre vent which is nicer IMHO.
