KYB Shocks

Postby Dave » Sun Oct 02, 2005 10:42 pm

Got a full set of KYB's last week and was getting them fitted over the weekend, turns out that the bottom of the shock that holds the spring was rubbing off the top of the wheel....
I wouldn't have thought the wheel size would have made a difference, haven't rang Camskill but i will tomorrow, is this a case of them just sending the wrong ones?

I'd be very surprised but its possible. I don't know of anyone running 18's with them fitted mind you, what size tyre have you got on there? Theres about 1cm of clearence between my shocks (also Camskill KYBs) and the wheel tyre.

I've got 225/40/18's on, but i would have thought that Camskill would have put some sort of warning on about not being able to run 18's with the KYB's.... Plus i thought that they were just a standard replacement.

KYB's aren't standard replacement - you just need to put them side by side with the originals to see that. The KYBs are also about 30% stiffer and lighter as well. It may be your tyre profile Dave - its unusual to have a 40profile on a 225/18 - thats quite an oversized diameter. I have heaps of room under my KYBs on the 215/45 17's - which is also oversized but not to the same extent.

Points all accepted but i would definitely have thought that Camskill would have pointed this out..... which makes me think that they are the wrong size

I didn't measure them up as i had left the car with someone and they actually said that there was a difference in size alright.

Did you speak with them yet?

Myself and MfFTO are running 215/45/17's which means that the overall diameter is 14mm larger than stock, in your case, 225/40/18's will add an additional 26mm which might just foul the bottom of the shock.

I've emailed them, i like to get replies in writing in case i ever need it, but i'll give him till the afternoon and give him a ring.

I was close on the old shocks but i would have assumed that if it fits no problems on the old system, the KYB's wouldn't have been a problem.

Assumption is the mother of all fcuk up's i know!!

Just seem to have no luck with this car whatsoever!!

I checked the mother's standard shock and wheels and there is very little clearance there as well....

To add to that, experience is a cruel master ;)

What sort of condition are your tyres in? The only option might be to replace them with a lower profile.

that's not an option i want to take to be honest, if it's a case that they are the right ones and they won't fit, i'll either send them back or sell them on, but i am totally giving Camskill the benefit of doubt here cos i know mike is a top guy and has sorted a lot of people out, but i do seriously doubt that i would have been the only person to encounter this problem and if that was the case i would definitely know that Camskill would have put some sort of warning/disclaimer about the possibilites of this.

I think its really down to you having the wrong profile tyre fitted. If you had kept to the standard rolling radius you wouldn't have the problem.

Are the KYBs shorter than the standard shocks? ie designed for lowered springs.

they are a bit shorter as far as my mechanic told me but i didn't envisage any problem seeing that i already have lowering springs and no problems with the standard ones.

I would imagine there's more people than me out there running the wrong profile and if this was a problem with fitting the kyb's there would/should have been a mention on the site.

just talking to Mike there, the wheel is too big...... Agghhhh!!!! :?

top bloke though, i've a couple of options, firstly they said they'll take em back no problems which is always good, or reduce tyre thread down to 35's, he also said that maybe a spacer would help clear it, so i'll talk to my guy tonight and see if that would help the situation, if not i'll send em back probably, or if someone wanted them at cost price they would be welcome to them.

OEM shock are made by KYB but are only available through Mitsi for aftermarket sale.
The ones sold by Camskill are actually for the Volvo S40. Exactly the same sizing as the OEM, only difference is the angle of the seat for the coil spring. When fitted they knock thec camber steeing outside specification. Adjustable camber bolts may sort the problem but not sure with 18"

mike mentioned that it might sort it but came to the conclusion that it wouldn't, just had a look under the wheel arch last night and i can't see how a spacer would help, it'd have to be a 25mm one or something to maybe have a chance but then my front wheels would look a little chav!!

looks like i'll be sending them back unless someone wants a set without having to pay for the shipping....

looks like i may be keeping these, mechanic tried em with a 5mm spacer that i needed for the brakes and he reckons a 10mm would sort it out no problems!!

Roughly how much are the spacers?
