FTO and Tunnels

Postby Kace » Mon Nov 15, 2004 10:08 pm

Anyone had the opportunity to let their FTO rip into the red zone going through a tunnel ? or is there even a tunnel in this country to do it.

I remember doing this in Zurich once with the top down in an SLK at 120mph - beautifully noisy and massively scary. I'd love to do it with the Mivec/ITG

Anyone see yer man do it on Top Gear last night in the Zonda ?

I was thinking the same. When is the port tunnel opening?

We've the tunnel in Cork, but its only .35 of a mile long so it would be a brief experience, and 'officially' its 50mph but I haven't seen any speed cameras or anything... not that I'm encouraging or endorsing such an action!

The best tunnel in Ireland has to be the tunnel between Kenmare and Glengarriff -

Call me sad if you like - but I've turned around a few times to go back through it - Mivec zone + ITG + RSR exhaust =
Even more sad - I have it on video.

Steelroe - I'm sure you know the tunnel I'm talking about.

Sorry CJ - its on a camcorder - not sure about how to convert it either - the next time I go down there I'll use the video and audio on the digital camera like I should have had in the first place!

You don't need to go fast to get max effect - I reckon 2nd gear in the mivec zone is the business - you can also put the windows down at this speed - if you're going faster there is too much wind noise.
The Cork tunnel is ok but its too big - the enclosed narrow solid rock tunnel in Kenmare is perfect - its pitch dark in there as well - so with full lights and full throttle in a narrow tunnel its just unbelieveable. This road is very quiet over the winter - I was up there for half an hour and saw 2 other cars.

Great scenery too - good place for a meet if it wasn't so isolated.

While on holidays in the South of France I was driving behind a Ferrari 355, on approaching one of those tunnels cut into the side of the rock face, the driver slowed down, dropped a gear and nailed it :!: I was travelling in the wake of this, very impressive sound :) I can see why the motoring jornalists always go on about it.

I have been behind a few TVR's in tunnels in London when I worked there for a few years - and the 4.5 Cerbera that dropped a gear and floored it still brings a tear to my eye. (there it goes again!).

Actually, I have the standard exhaust on the GR. Had to remove the rear sub-box due to the fact that it rusted away. There was no sound increase at all. I'm now wondering if anyone has removed any other muffs-i mean boxes on the exhaust and if so was there any decent sound increase?
