exhaust question

Postby colm_mcm » Sat Nov 17, 2007 5:43 pm

I was investigating a blowing noice from the middle park of my car this afternoon. put it up on the lift and saw a cylindrcal (non flexible) section between the cat and the backbox, right after the cat. there are two holes drilled on the bottom, each about an inch from the ends. there are exhaust gasses coming out here.

What's the story here?

How big are the hole's can a weld be tacked over them ? are you sure they were drilled, and not the result of maybe a bracket breaking away. Could they of had a socket welded there for the fitment of some probes like a lambada(spell) sensor or an aftermarket one, or are the big enough to fit a sparkplug, in someones attempt to do a flamer kit?

Too far back to be a flamer kit (these are fitted to the backbox). Also a bracket wouldn't be fitted to the underside of a reasonator.

Colm - the cylindrical shape you speak of is a reasonator (helps silence the exhaust - similar to a baffle) - there is no reason why there would be two holes drilled in this. Have you a standard or aftermarket exhaust?

Sounds to me like your center section is on the way out and the holes you speak of is simply wear and tear - no big surprise if its the OE part. Best to change the centre section or exhaust - a patch-up job will buy you a couple of months tops and will work out the least economical option if you intend to hold onto the FTO.

they're around 5mm, perfectly centred and the same distance from the ends. maybe holes for a bracket. I was thinking drainage holes or something, but that makes no sense. Just wanted to be sure they weren't supposed to be there before filling them in. It passed an NCT in June, so maybe there was something joined on to it that fell off.

there is writing on it, something beginning with J

there is an aftermarket exhaust, but not a Decat or anything

Still could have been a bracket, it's been awhile since i've looked under a car but i'm guessing there is a flange either end of the reasonator if thats the case and brackets are usually to the top they coulkd have broken away and the previous owner welded new brackets to the opposite side where he had something to weld to as you could flip it 180 deg and the flanges meet up perfect. Thou this doesn't explain perfect 5mm holes now that i ain't seen before.

Likely to be "jasma" - its a Jap standard for exhuasts.
If these holes have been purposefully drilled or belonged to a bracket then a quick fix should be fine.

Is there any sign of a remainder of the bracket hanger fixed to the car underside?
