starting from cold

Postby Mille » Tue Feb 28, 2006 11:32 pm

Hey Guys

Starting my car from cold in the mornings it just dies if you take your foot off the gas
Once its hot it runs perfectly well

Any ideas what this could be ?

my mechanic reckons its the thermostat

Thanx Again

A lot of 'idle' problems seem to be the stepper motor - have a look at this thread,
http://www.fto-ireland.com/forum/phpBB2 ... ht=stepper
and then do a search for 'stepper' in the forums and you'll find loads of threads.

If it keeps cutting out on idle it's always worth cleaning the spepper motor.
Here's a link that shows how to do it: http://www.funky-fto.co.uk/idling.html

Good luck

Cheers for the reply JD

I took out the stepper motor and replaced it with a working one (from a Hyundai Sonata) and the problem is still there.

The car just does not want to idle when its cold

Any other suggestions where I go from here :?:

Have you tried the error code check to see if the ECU reports any problems? Link how to do it here

My guess would be a sensor somewhere, in which case the ECU might report the fault.

Prob a 100/1 shot, but I had the same thing happening early winter last year. Driving into work in the morns, home in the eves, idled badly, didnt seem to know what revs to hold at to keep ticking over, and it cut out a lot. Then when the engine cut out and power steering went stiff and I went off the road (no damage thank god), I checked it out. Was just the battery on its last legs, once I was driving for a bit it was fine (as it charged itself), but I equivocated this with once it heated up it was fine.

Like I said an outside bet, but you never know.....

Did you ckeck the wires going into the stepper, the green one is a prime candidate for breaking and causing idling woes

I have the same problem before, I found 2 cut wires one is green forgot the other one. another thing is that the steeper motor was worngly connected the pins should be facing down.

I had a gander at these yesterday when I swopped over the stepper motor and they looked ok as well

Today I have ordered a thermostat temperature sensor and will fit it on Saturday. If this does not resolve the issue I will do the ECU test.
I called the local Mitsi garage and they do the test for €30 which seems reasonale enough.I'd probably break something if I attempt it myself lol.

Dan Seamans? That seems to be their magic number, I'm getting my lights focused there tomorrow for €30! The HIDs have highlighted how badly the right side one is focused, so I've been holding off on night time pics until thats sorted.

Pulling diagnostic info out of the the ECU is very straightforward. Out of interest, wht did you but a stat temp sensor, did someone say it could be a problem?

The very place! That seems a bit steep to get your lights focused ?
€30 is their miscellanous charge for odd jobs.
I mite run into you tomorrow as I am picking up the temperature switch in the morning.

Aye this was my mechanics conclusion after his head was under the bonnet for 5 seconds

just an update ... i fitted a new coolant temperature sensor and this has helped matters somewhat in that it has no problem idling during the day on starting but still does not work first thing in the morning .

I looked at the stepper motor again and there is one red wire that has frayed completely so this may be causing the problem

Anybody know where I can find an Electrical manual to work out the continuity of the wires, to trace back the frayed wire on the connector back to the ECU ??

np... it was Friday I went into them, and yup, got them focused nicely I think despite a 'disclaimer' from the guy who did them  I'm driving around now noticing how yellow/brown other cars lights look compared to my bright white light! 8)

I fitted a stepper motor from another FTO and the car now seems to be idling from cold. Turns out the first stepper motor from the Hyundai Lantra was dodgy!!
But there seems to be one slight hitch , when it revs at idle ... the lowest I can bring it to is 1500 rpm ( I adjusted the throttle screw to bring it down as much as I could)
It will not go below 1000 rpm like it should.

I tried restting the ecu but did not help

Any ideas what can be causing this?

Is this when the engine is cold or warm?
