The next car

Postby soc » Thu Dec 04, 2003 1:17 pm

Finally I've seen a realistic car that I want next. Until last night I was thinking Lancer Evo or even Impreza but I could never get my head around driving something so ugly (ok so they're pretty in a brute force, I'm very fast kinda way). Thanks to the FTO I've really grown to like coupes :-)

Anyhow dropped into the statoil in Kilternan village and saw a guy filling up a red 1991 Honda NSX........ gorgeous is the only word to describe the car. And boy did it get the stares!!! Started chatting to the guy (late 40's, balding etc.) and he reckons they are not that expensive to run (apart from the tax and insurance) but he said definitely worth it. A sweet handling car with a great sounding engine, bags of power, rear-wheel drive, a sweet leather interior and looks to die for......... that's what I want!!!

Then this moring I passed a Mazda RX7 on the way to work - another gorgeous car.

So I decided. Next car will be either an NSX or an RX7. Time to start saving!!

Have you priced the NSX???
Are they not in the €50,000 and above bracket?

The RX-7 kicks ass though, as long as its one of the newer models.

But man... you are talking expensive here.

Aye, it could be expensive but I don't think a 1991 NSX is that expensive. And my fiance was trying to get me to consider an Audi TT (urrrgh). I'd be more interested in running costs.... so begins the long process of research (parts, servicing, insurance, tax etc)

I would say RX-7 parts are expensive, they were common back home, but I have seen very few here, and cause its a rotary it might be harder to find engine parts.
Apparently rotaries dont wear out much

Except you need an engine rebuild at approx 60-70K miles which aint too cheap when you're looking at resale. The NSX just has that super car look about it but for a reasonable price - I'd gladly pay the price of a 2nd hand porsche boxer for an NSX - it just looked amazing - made my in my FTO feel decidely shabby :)

I know a guy who has an MR2, an old one at that, '91. Was looking at fto's a while back. But has since had a spin in an NSX and won't shut up about it...

Here's a roadtest on newer ones..

I agree, NSX's are the business, you might have some competition looking for one Shane ;)

None for sale in Ireland at the mo, but this link to autotrader.co.uk will give you an idea of what they're worth over the water.

yea I can imagine. I did a quick look on the net and there are none in ireland and only a handful in the UK. I also emailed honda ireland and they said that you'd be lucky to find one  ah well I've plenty of time as I won't be changing cars until after the wedding which is next July!

Fantastic cars.
But can anyone explain why I can get a quote of Euro 1700 from 123.ie for fully comp for myself and the missus on a 1993 NSX valued at Euro 40,000 and it won't give me a quote for the FTO ?. That's less than I'm paying for the FTO at the moment.

Just had a look - by my reckoning you could land a '95 3.0lt NSX, 50K miles (approx) for in the region of €40K (vrt, duty and conversion from sterling included)...... lot of money for a '95 car but they are rumoured to be very reliable and the fun might just justify the cost :?:
