Petrol help

Postby Syst3m » Wed Jan 03, 2007 9:03 pm

Hi, forgive me for being a bit nieve but i was wondering if anybody could help me. I bought a '96 FTO GR yesterday and when enquired about the fuel he was using (quite possibly should have done sooner, but anyway...) he said he's been using 91. Now am i wrong in saying that the GR needs at least 96 or is that just the GPX. Also if it is the wrong fuel, how much damage will it have done to the engine through knocking / pinking etc. Any help will be greatly appreciated. Cheers

Probably no damage - the FTO ECU would have adjusted to suit the lower grade fuel - he would have seen poorer performance on the 91 octane than 95-98 octane though. The car will take about 60kms to adjust to the higher octane unless you do an ECU reset (disconnect battery for 40mins).

Thanks. much appreciated. Its almost on Empty now so should i fill up with 96 then disconect battery or disconect it now and fill up straight after. Also is it alright to mix the fuels, ie. whats left in the tank? Thanks

If left for the 60kms to adjust, it wont be damaging the engine during that time? sorry for the flurry on simple questions but im not very mechanically minded.

Thanks for all your help. I have to say, even though i live in NZ i think this fto owners club is defeniately the best and friendliest in the world. Has always come across as a friendly and welcoming place. Cheers

Fill it up with whatever takes your fancy - with exception of diesel perhaps. FTO ECU will take care of the rest.

sorry bout diggin an old topic up but ive had my FTO GPX for about 2months now and the bloke that i bought her off told me to put 97 ron in it as thats what he had put in it since he bought it, the thing is ive read in numerous posts that the ecu adjusts itself to whichever fuel u put in it.
Is this true?

cheers

I assume you're up North if 97 RON is available to you. If you can afford it, use it, if not, you can run the V6 engined FTOs on 95 no problem - what you've read in other posts is correct.

hi im from midlands, accross the water.
ive put 97 in since ive had it as i was also told that the tappets get noisier if using lesser ron fuel.
ive filled up with shell which is 99 ron few times but other than shell and tesco which is also 99 ron i just put super unleaded in.

Thats a new one on me, doesn't sound right to be honest.

As you're in the UK, I'd be inclined to use 97 or higher if its available to you. The FTO (V6) was designed to run on 98RON, using higher octane fuel such a Optimax or Ultimate can only be a good thing in terms of reducing the risk of detonation and smooth engine running characteristics.

That said, the FTO will run fine on 95, the ECU will retard timing accordingly if it detects knock. We don't have any choice over here when it comes to fuel - 95 is all we get!

Some Shell stations have Shell V-power pertol. It is 98 or 99 octane.
I`m not sure but when I was living in Poland Shell had (and still has) 95, 98 and V-Power Racing 99octane on all stations

All Rep of Ireland Shell V Power is still 95 RON. I don't know why the Irish market made a decision en-masse to stop selling higher rated fuel especially as theres more performance cars around these days than ever???
